Zinc is a nutrient that can be found in several foods and plays many important roles in our bodies. Zinc is normally obtained from food and supplements– that is because the body does not produce this nutrient naturally. It is also known as a trace mineral, meaning you need just a small amount to be able to function.

It is required for a number of processes in the body and they include, healing of wounds, cell growth, DNA synthesis, and many others.

SYMPTOMS OF A ZINC DEFICIENCY

A zinc deficiency is a result of not having enough zinc in the body to function properly. Some symptoms associated with this deficiency are; fatigue, hair loss, diarrhea,  loss of appetite, skin sores, and many more.

CAUSES OF ZINC DEFICIENCY

  • Excessive use of alcohol can reduce the amount of zinc in you.
  • Having a digestive disorder
  • Being a vegetarian

SOURCES OF FOOD THAT CONTAIN ZINC.

There are many plants and animal foods that are rich in zinc. It is recommended that both children and adults get an adequate amount of zinc on a daily basis. The following foods are good sources of zinc

  • Shellfish: Oyster, crab, mussels, lobster, and clams
  • Red meat
  • Poultry
  • Fish
  • Beans
  • Wholegrain

Zinc is important during the development stage of children, adolescents, and pregnant women. It is required that teenagers, breastfeeding mothers, and pregnant women take more zinc supplements.
