WHEN WILL THE SIM CARD RE-REGISTRATION END IN GHANA
The Sim Card re-registration is an exercise brought up by the government of Ghana. It commenced in the year 2021 on the 1st of October. The purpose of this exercise was to enable all citizens to link their National Identification Card (Ghana Card) with their sim cards to help build a credible SIM database to help address cyber fraud issues and secure our SIM card-based transactions.
This exercise was initially expected to end on the 31st of March 2022. However, about 7.5 million citizens have still not obtained their Ghana Cards, hence their inability to register their sim cards. In view of this, the government has decided to extend the date. Below are the details on this date extension.
EXTENSION OF DATE FOR SIM CARD RE-REGISTRATION
According to the Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs. Usually Owusu-Ekuful, statistics show that about 14,091,542 SIM Cards have been linked to the Ghana Card while 99,445 New sims have been registered, as of March 17, 2022.
Also, 10,348,532 “bio-captures” have been conducted as of 17th March 2022. She then stated that since some citizens are still yet to register their SIM Cards, the deadline has been extended to the 31st of July, 2022. She further added that the SIM registration App needs to be updated for the registration of diplomats.
However, it may take more time to do this. She also added that a Self-Service SIM Registration App is being developed, but it will be ready for operation by mid-April. The purpose of this App is to enable Ghanaian residents abroad to register their SIM Cards.
FURTHER THOUGHT
Moreso, Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful added that due to the issues stated above, that is; the development of a new Self Service Sim Registration App, updating of the Sim Registration App, as well as some citizens inability to obtain their Ghana Cards, it is necessary that the deadline is extended.
Thus, extending the deadline to the 31st of July, 2022. This will help ensure that every SIM Card is captured in order to produce a credible SIM database at the end of this entire Sim Registration exercise. She finally commended all Ghanaians and foreign residents in Ghana for collaborating and supporting this exercise.
It is the government’s hope and belief that the cyber fraud issue will be addressed and SIM card based transactions will be secured through this exercise, and help transform the economy digitally in the long run.
