How can I stop the pain when I urinate?

Painful urination also known as dysuria is a condition that affects the bladder and causes discomfort while urinating. The discomfort can include, pain, stinging, or a burn when you are urinating and this can indicate some underlying medical conditions. There are so many causes for this condition and they are treatable as well.

People experiencing painful urination are to inform their doctor of every symptom they are experiencing so they know how to diagnose them and make the right recommendation for their treatment.

CAUSES OF PAINFUL URINATION

Urinary tract infections (UTI):

Painful urination is a common symptom of UTI. A UTI can occur when there is a build-up of bacteria in the Urinary tract. The Urinary tract is made up of the urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. The urethra is a tube-like organ that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder.

When there is an inflammation in any of these organs it will lead to painful urination.  The symptoms associated with UTIs include the need to frequently urinate, foul-smelling urine, and pain in the side and at the back.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs):

Contracting STIs like chlamydia, herpes, and gonorrhea can cause painful urination. It is always important to get check your status because some of these diseases do not show symptoms.

It is advisable that those who are sexually active or have multiple sexual partners are to be regularly checked to know if they are clean.

Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID):

This is an infection that is first caused by bacteria in the vagina and later spreads to other parts of the reproductive system like the fallopian tubes, ovaries, uterus, and cervix. PID can cause pains in the abdomen,  painful sex, and painful urination among other symptoms.

Kidney stones:

It is a build-up of materials like calcium or uric acid that have become hard stones and are around the kidney organ or near the Urinary tract. Some of the symptoms include backside pains, cloudy urine, fever, and others.

Medication:

Some medicines prescribed by doctors for the treatment of cancer can have painful urination as a side effect. Consult your doctor if you start experiencing the pain, and ask them if you should continue taking the drug or put it on hold.

WHAT TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE

Depending on the cause of the pain, your doctor can prescribe an antibiotic for those with UTIs or STIs or other medication that can calm your inflamed bladder.

HOW TO PREVENT PAINFUL URINATION

  • Drink a lot of water
  • Use protection when you engage in sexual activities
  • Know the content of your food that triggers inflammation in your bladder

IN CONCLUSION

When your condition persists for a long time and gets worse you need to see a doctor. The doctor will diagnose to know if the causes of painful urination are treatable.
