The Toronto Metropolitan University CERC Fellowships in Canada are available to international students on a fully funded basis. About Toronto Metropolitan University

Toronto Metropolitan University, previously known as Ryerson University, was established on September 16, 1948, as the Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto, Ontario. In 1993, it achieved the status of a fully established university. In response to extensive criticism over its founder, Egerton Ryerson, who played a role in establishing residential schools, the institution decided to rebrand itself as Toronto Metropolitan University in 2022.

Historical events and past occurrences.

The institute is located on St James Square, a historic site where the Toronto Normal School was founded in 1852 by Egerton Ryerson, the principal superintendent of education for Canada West.

In 1941, the location for teacher education was changed to accommodate a training center for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Between 1945 and 1948, the facilities were utilized by the Training and Re-establishment Institute, a facility that provided vocational training to military veterans who were returning from the war. Ryerson Institute of Technology initially provided two-year programs focused on trades. However, in the early 1950s, it expanded its offerings to include three-year diploma programs that incorporated a substantial academic aspect.

Establishing the University

The 1964 Ryerson Act established the independent Ryerson Polytechnic Institute, complete with its board of governors. In 1971, the Act was modified to authorize Ryerson to confer degrees in addition to its diplomas. It also joined the Council of Ontario Universities that year. In 1992, the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board awarded Ryerson professional accreditation for six programs. The subsequent year, Ryerson was acknowledged and granted the status of a university.

During 1997, only three of its programs did not result in baccalaureate degrees. Subsequently, the university established graduate programs by its revised mission as an institution of higher education. In June 1993, the institution underwent a transition to university status, resulting in a name change to Ryerson Polytechnic University and a heightened focus on research. The name was altered to Ryerson University (RU) in 2001.

In the early 2000s, three additional structures were constructed on the campus to meet the growing demands of the student body and expanding range of academic offerings. These buildings include the Centre for Computing and Engineering, the Centre for Graphic Communications Management, and the Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health. RU introduced its inaugural trio of graduate programs (Communication and Culture, Environmental Applied Science and Management, and Spatial Analysis) in the year 2000. The graduate programs in Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Electrical and Computer, and Mechanical) were established in 2001.

Change of Name

In 2022, Ryerson University officially declared that the university would be renamed Toronto Metropolitan University. The decision to alter the name is a response to the long-standing criticism surrounding the founder, Egerton Ryerson, due to his involvement in the establishment of residential schools. This adjustment was implemented following a set of suggestions put forth by the university’s Standing Strong (Mash Koh Wee Kah Pooh Win) Task Force.

Toronto Metropolitan University is the inaugural school in Canada to alter its name as a gesture of peace with Indigenous peoples.

This fellowship is available to students from any country.

Requirements for eligibility:

Individuals who are employed in civil society organizations or government agencies who possess international expertise in the fields of migration, immigrant integration, or inclusion are eligible to apply for this fellowship opportunity.

  • The CERN Civil Society and Administration Fellowship Program will be conducted from October 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.
  • Ensure that your CV and cover letter include the following points and submit them online.
  1. Elucidate how this program will enhance the efficiency and productivity of your job and organization, and articulate the factors that drive your motivation to be a part of it.
  3. Describe the extent to which your present work is in line with CERC’s research themes and projects.
  4. Enumerate the activities you want to undertake while you are here, such as attending conferences, conducting research, engaging in collaborations, and developing proposals.
  5. This program will facilitate networking with individuals who share similar interests and professional goals.
  6. Locate a mentor by selecting two academic advisors from the CERC Research Team Website.
  7. Arrange your visit by specifying your desired dates for the residency program within the designated period.
