The University of Malaya has more than 4,000 international students from over 80 different countries. These students are invited to apply for scholarships and financial aid for the academic year 2024-2025. Information about University of Malaya?

The institution of Malaya, located in Kuala Lumpur, is Malaysia’s most ancient public research institution, established in 1905.

The institution, once named the King Edward VII College of Medicine, was established in response to a scarcity of medical aides in Singapore and Penang in the late 1890s. Subsequently, it was relocated to the former psychiatric hospital adjacent to the Singapore General Hospital.

In 1949, the university combined with Raffles College, an institution founded in 1929 by the English to educate Malaysians in the fields of arts and social sciences. This merger resulted in the establishment of the University of Malaya, which took its name from the country’s name at that period.

In 1960, the government made the decision to split the university into two separate national universities. One of these universities, now known as the National University of Singapore, became an autonomous institution in Singapore. The other university, established in 1962, retained its name as the University of Malaya and is located in Kuala Lumpur.

The university’s Coat of Arms features the foliage of the Palmyra palm, which served as the medium for printing ancient Malay texts. The university’s motto, ‘Ilmu Puncha Kemajuan’, is inscribed over these words, combining elements from Arabic, Sanskrit, and Malay languages. It conveys the profound idea that knowledge serves as the foundation for growth. At the center, there are three Malayan tigers, representing the three primary ethnic groups in Malaysia: Malays, Chinese, and Indians.

Currently, the campus is situated 12 kilometers away from the central area of Kuala Lumpur. It spans across an area of 920 acres and features amenities such as an Olympic-sized swimming pool and a lake suitable for kayaking. Since 2009, it has obtained self-accreditation and currently boasts over 60 research centers organized into six research clusters.

Requirements for University of Malaya Scholarships

To be eligible for the scholarship program, all applicants must satisfy the following qualifying criteria:

  • Waiver of tuition fees for applicants.
  • The candidate must possess a Bachelor’s degree in relevant subject areas with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 or an equivalent grade on a scale of 4, specifically at the level of 4 (First Class Honors) or upper second-class honors.
  • Only students who are currently enrolled in the first year of their Master’s Degree program at the University of Malaya are eligible to apply.
  • Before applying for the scholarship program, it is necessary for the applicant to possess an offer letter from the University of Malaya.
  • This award is open to applicants from all countries.
  • Applications from candidates demonstrating exceptional academic achievement will be evaluated, and those who meet the criteria will receive an email notification confirming their eligibility.

Requirements for the University of Malaya Scholarship

Bachelor’s degree student:

  • Official academic transcripts and certificates of the applicant
  • Applicant’s passport or another identification document
  • 2 referee reports from the applicant’s counselor or academic institution
  • Proof of English Language proficiency
  • Statement of purpose from the applicant.
  • Passport-sized photos of applicants

Graduate student:

  • The candidate’s legitimate academic transcripts and certificates
  • A photocopy of the applicant’s passport or another form of identification.
  • Two reference papers from counselors and teachers.
  • Documentation demonstrating the applicant’s ability in the English language.
  • Applicants must submit a statement of purpose/research proposal with a maximum of 2,000 words. This document should include the study field, problem description, objectives, justification for the research, planned technique, and projected outcome.

  • The applicant’s educational background and relevant details.
  • The applicant’s employment history and notable achievements.
  • Reference letter from academic staff at the University for candidates.
