TOP 5 MOST BRUTAL AFRICAN DICTATORS OF ALL TIME

For a fact, Africa as a continent has once been exposed to horrible and ruthless dictators.  Though Africa rose above colonialism from the year 1950 to the early 90s, there was a point in time when the African continent failed to rise above some government dictatorship. In this article, we shall identify some of the most brutal dictators in Africa during a certain period of time.

LIST OF 5 MOST BRUTAL AFRICAN DICTATORS

1 . First on the list is Colonel Muammar Gaddafi

Gaddafi is noted across the African continent for his ruthless way of governing. He gained power through a coup in the year 1969 and spent about 42 years in office. Gaddafi however, implements several projects such as education, health, housing, and potable water.

Nonetheless, he also engaged in serious crimes like torturing his own citizens and other extrajudicial murders. He also noted the Libyan dictators who messed up the country by organizing chaos revolution in the year 2011. This was because he didn’t want to step down from the office. However,  Libya rebels finally assassinated him and ended his ruthless rule.

2 . Secondly, Gnassingbe Eyadema

This is also an African dictator who ruled in Togo in the year 1967, also through a very fatal coup. In Africa, he is considered a dictator who served for a long time. This is because rising against him was quite difficult. He spent 38 years in rule with a bad historical name. It was his dictatorial rule that caused other African nations to emulate it. He finally gave up the ghost in 2005 when he had a cardiac arrest. After his death, he was succeeded by his son, Faure Gnassingbe.

3 . Next is Idi Amin Dada

Idi was among the ruthless African dictators. He reigned from the year 1971 to 1979 in Uganda, after embarking on a coup and overthrowing the ex-president called Milton Obote.  His rule was full of the butchering of humans. In his governance,  he abused his citizens’ freedom rights through corruption, murders, and all sort of barbaric acts. Several humans, about 500,000 people met their untimely death because of Idi’s wicked rule. He finally died in exile in the year 2003.

4 . Another is Charles Taylor

Charles Taylor was a president in Liberia, yet he was a rebel who was involved in serious wars like the Sierra Leone Civil War. He gained power in the year 1997 and reigned until the year 2003. Nothing good can be told of Charles Taylor. He was found guilty of committing several crimes such as recruiting child soldiers, killing, and being a terrorist.  In 2003, he stepped down from power, and he was put behind bars in the year 2012.

5 . Finally, Sani Abacha

In Nigeria, one of the most popular dictators is Sani Abacha. He took over Nigeria in the year 1993. His wicked motive was to embezzle billions and steal his country’s oil resources. He was also involved in murdering all his opponents. Though he managed to achieve some good things, it was all done through corrupted means. One of the reasons why Nigerians still have a memory of Abacha is because of how he was able to reduce crime rates in the country.
