Berkeley offers several scholarship alternatives to help with the cost of your education. To further reduce the overall cost of your education, you can apply for additional scholarships. ​

Concerning the University of California, Berkeley

Berkeley, Davis, Irvine, Los Angeles, Merced, Riverside, San Diego, San Francisco, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz are all part of the University of California system of public universities in the United States. The university’s roots can be located in the Oakland-based, private College of California, which was established in 1855.

The college became the University of California in 1868 after merging with the Agricultural, Mining, and Mechanical Arts College, which had been founded as a land-grant institution in 1866. The university relocated to Berkeley in 1873. Other schools joined the system over time. About 300,000 people are enrolled in the system, which is governed by a 26-member board of regents.

Berkeley, the system’s primary campus, is home to over 45,000 students. With more than 350 degree programs offered, its 15 schools and colleges include those for optometry, public health, social welfare, public policy, natural resources, media, and environmental design. A significant research organization, it runs the Space Sciences Laboratory, the Energy Institute, the Cancer Research Laboratory, the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, and the neighboring Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (under government contract).

There are museums on campus covering subjects including physics, anthropology, art, and botany. Numerous eminent scientists, including chemistry Nobel laureate Glenn T. Seaborg and physics laureate Luis W. Alvarez, have taught there.

With funding from one or more of our approximately 900 university and private philanthropic funds, over 3,000 students are awarded Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarships each year. Other than completing the California Dream Act Application or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), there isn’t an application process. Giving now will enable you to have a positive influence on and contribute to the future of the students of tomorrow.

Criteria

• Academic merit and financial need are taken into consideration when awarding scholarships to new and continuing students who meet the requirements outlined by the Academic Senate Committee on Undergraduate Scholarships, Honors, and Financial Aid.
• Residents of California and students who qualify for AB540 who graduate from high school with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 4.1
• Residents of California and AB 540-eligible freshmen with a GPA of at least 3.5 who are transferring from community colleges
• Awarding continuing students with a GPA of at least 3.5
• Your level of financial need determines how much money you will be awarded for the scholarship. A university grant is given to students who meet the requirements for financial aid and whose GPA is less than 3.5.

Looking through Your Scholarship(s)

CalCentral will feature your “Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship” starting in the spring. The scholarship amount will be converted to a named scholarship award beginning in the late summer.

Your $6,000 Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship, for instance, could be divided into two separate awards, such as a $1,500 Phoebe Hearst Scholarship and a $4,500 Campanile Scholarship. Unless your overall eligibility changes, the mentioned scholarships should equal the amount of your original Berkeley Undergraduate Scholarship award.

Berkeley Has Not Yet Admitted Residents from California

Before the deadline, fill out the University of California Application for Transfer or Freshman Admission and Scholarships. Cite your attributes in the “Scholarships” area, such as your ancestry and professional interests, because many scholarships are given to students who fulfill particular requirements set by the giver.

Before March 2nd, fill out and submit the California Dream Act Application or the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The Chancellor’s and Regents’ Scholarships

The most distinguished scholarship that UC Berkeley offers to incoming undergraduate students is the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship.

A chosen group of Berkeley undergraduates who stand out for their originality, leadership, commitment to service, and strong beliefs are given the scholarship. The dedication to excellence, which is one of this institution’s core values, is reflected in the candidates.

Benefits of the Chancellor’s and Regents’ Scholarships

• Priority Class Enrollment: A very limited number of students, including Regents and Chancellor’s Scholars, are granted priority enrollment for classes.
• Faculty and Peer Mentorship: UC Berkeley faculty members and other scholars can serve as mentors for scholars, offering advice on both academic and professional pursuits.
• Research Fellowship: Scholars can apply for funding of up to $1,000 to support ongoing research initiatives through the Regents’ and Chancellor’s Research Fellowships.
• Enrollment in on-campus accommodation is a guarantee for scholars for the whole term of their scholarships.
• Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholars Association: The RCSA is an organization in which all scholars are automatically enrolled. Throughout the academic year, the student organization sponsors social events, community service projects, and professional and academic development activities, including TEDx Berkeley.
• Financial Aid Advising: In the Undergraduate Scholarships, Honors, and Prizes Office, scholars can get assistance with questions concerning financial aid and scholarships from a specialized scholarship coordinator.
• Financial Literacy Counseling: To assist academics in learning how to manage their finances and costs, the Center for Financial Wellness, UC Berkeley’s peer-to-peer financial literacy program, offers unique programs and counseling.
• Scholarship Tenure and Monetary Grant: The Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholarship consists of a monetary grant that is renewable every year for a maximum of four semesters for entering transfer students and up to eight semesters for incoming freshmen. A $2,500 annual honorary award is given to scholars who do not require financial assistance. The Financial Aid and Scholarships Office determines each scholar’s need and awards scholarships up to that amount.
• Alumni Network: After graduating, scholars join a dynamic community of Berkeley alumni that is transforming the world.

UC Berkeley’s New Leader Scholarship Program

The New Leader Scholarship searches out, nurtures, and supports exceptional scholars and change-makers who are dedicated to leading the way in the pursuit of a future grounded in social justice. Scholars are engaged in a network of leaders, mentors, and alumni that spans from undergraduate school through graduate school and professional life, in addition to receiving scholarship funds to lower financial barriers.
