Political parties currently governing 5 African countries

A political party refers to an organised group of people ,with the same ideologies and want to control the affairs of government by winning an election.

TYPES OF POLITICAL PARTY

There are various types of political parties. Amongst them is the elite party, which is a political party that is made up of only elites in society. This type of political party is open to intellectuals or technocrats.  It doesn’t focus on numerical strength because it prefers quality over quantity.

A mass party refers to a type of political party that believes in having a lot of supporters. For this type of party, they believe there is strength in numbers. Other types of political parties include the direct, indirect and ideological party.

FUNCTIONS OF A POLITICAL PARTY

The roles of a political party include winning political power, choosing a candidate, educating the electorates, using propaganda to criticize the party in power, and also forming public opinion.

AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND THE POLITICAL PARTIES IN POWER

Most African countries practice democracy, therefore there are political parties that choose a candidate to represent them in winning elections. The following are political parties currently in government.

1 . Firstly, Ghana

Ghana is a multiparty state but has two political parties that have been dominant in running the affairs of the country. The National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Convention People’s Party(CPP), Progressive People’s Party(PPP), and many more.

Currently, the New Patriotic Party is the party in power led by H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo. The party has been one of the dominant parties since Ghana leaned towards democracy in 1992. The party was founded by H.E John Agyekum Kuffour, the slogan of the party is development in freedom and its colors are red blue, and white.

2 . Secondly, Nigeria

The ruling party in Nigeria is the All Progressives Congress-led by Muhammadu Buhari.  The All Progressives Congress is one of the two popular political parties in Nigeria alongside the People’s Democratic Party.

3 . Thirdly, Kenya

Kenya used to be a one-party state but due to reforms, it is now a multiparty state.  The current political party steering the affairs of the country is the Jubilee Party which is led by Uhuru Kenyatta.

4 . Last but not least, The Gambia

The Gambia is a multiparty state but was a one-party state for over twenty-five years with Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction ruling. It was until December 2016 that power changed hands. Currently, the National People’s Party is the party in power and is led by Adama Barrow.

5 . Finally, South Africa

Although South Africa is practiced as a democracy, it is a one-party state with the African National Congress as the governing party. The current president of the country is Cyril Ramaphosa.
