NURSES JOIN TEACHERS TO DEMAND FOR COLA
On the 4th of July, Teachers Union in Ghana announced their decision to embark on indefinite strike action. This comes after the failure of the government to pay their 20% Cost of Living Allowance, to help supplement their monthly allowance.
This strike action is a result of the high inflation rate where there is an incessant increase in the prices of fuel and other goods and services. After barely 24 hours, the Nurses and Midwives in Ghana have also released a notice demanding a Cost of Living Allowance.
Furthermore, the leadership of the UPNMG, stated they are surprised at the laxity with which the welfare of Nurses and Midwives has been handled.
They also further stated that in 2014, a 10% Cost of Living Allowance was paid to Public Sector Workers to cushion them when things became very tough. This is a result of the high cost of living. They again claim that the UNPNMG find themselves in a similar situation this year. Hence expect nothing short of a similar top gap measure to cushion the many Nurses’ and Midwives in the country.
In lieu of the aforementioned, they stated in their release, “We the members of the UNION OF PROFESSIONAL NURSES AND MIDWIVES, GHANA(UPNMG) are equally calling on the government to as a matter of urgency to introduce at least 20% of our basic salaries as COLA. Whiles, we wait for the managers of the economy to turn things around”.
CONTINUATION OF PRESS STATEMENT
Thus, they affirm that this strict action by the Teachers Union is a call in the right direction. Hence they need full backing from all labor unions in the country.
In the release, the leadership stated, “ We have waited for the bearer of the Collective Bargaining Certificate for Nurses and Midwives to make a move. We have thus taken it upon ourselves as the second-largest Union within the Nursing and Midwifery profession to appeal to the government.
The earlier we begin to think about relooking at the conditions in which Nurses and Midwives work in Ghana. The better it will be for our health system as Nurses and Midwives play a major role in the health delivery system.
FURTHER THOUGHT
After this release, John Agbenyeavu, the Public Relations Officer of the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana, issued a statement. He stated that the leadership is calling on the employer as a matter of urgency to pay all Public Sector Workers the 20% COLA. This is to avoid further industrial actions. It is their hope that government will give ear to their call. Likewise the call of the Teachers Union for the betterment of the country.
