WHAT IS COLA AS BY TEACHERS UNION IN GHANA?
COLA IN BRIEF
COLA is an abbreviation for Cost of Living Allowance. This allowance is an increase in funding for teachers and other educational workers made by the government of a state due to inflation.
This Cost of Living Allowance is to help supplement teachers’ and other educational workers’ monthly salaries. COLA was requested and brought in by the Teachers Union in Ghana.
In February 2022, the various teacher unions in Ghana called upon the government to implement a Cost of Living Allowance for all teachers as well as educational workers.
THE CALL FOR COLA BY THE TEACHERS UNION IN GHANA
On the 24th of February, 2022, the leadership of the Teachers Union releases a press statement indicating the current experiences of incentives in prices of goods and services without giving any prior notice.
They said, “In recent times, Ghanaians have been experiencing incessant fuel increases, normally without advance notice, electricity is having its equal share of astronomical increases, while prices of foodstuffs and other consumables keep skyrocketing, all to the detriment of a helpless and hapless citizenry”. They further expressed their concern on the issue stating that when it comes to the issue of meager salary payments, teachers and educational workers are the most vulnerable.
In lieu of the above, the Teachers Union claim that though their salary is not really the best, they give out their utmost best to Ghanaian Children. Hence, they hereby demanded that the Government institutes a payment of between 20% to 30% Cost of Living Allowance for them to help pull them out of the current economic woods in which they find themselves.
Upon further deliberations by the government and the Teachers Union, the government assured to reach an agreement with the leadership of the Teachers Union by the close of 30th of June, 2022.
FURTHER THOUGHT
Finally, on the issue of COLA, Bright Wireko- Brobbey, the deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, expressed his concern and said, “I am still waiting for signals for us to meet where all stakeholders will be brought on board and the outcomes of those meetings will be lead bare to you (teachers).
Let’s keep our fingers crossed. The fact that times are hard is trite knowledge. It is a reality. Our largest workforce as a country is Teachers, and I just confess that public sector workers must be commended”. Nonetheless, the government has to date not responded to the issue of COLA demanded by the Teachers Union. This has resulted in the commencement of strike action by the Teachers Union from Monday, 4th July 2022 until further notice.
