5 biggest churches in Ghana with largest congregations in 2022
The Church is a public place where Christians meet to worship their creator. It can also be referred to as a gathering of Christians.
Most often, the church is more than just a place where the spiritual needs of people are met. It is a community where people look out for each other and support each other during good and bad times.
The measurements of a church as big are based on different criteria, such as area, volume, and capacity. These are some of the biggest churches with the largest congregation.
1 . Firstly, THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST
The Church of Pentecost is a pentecostal denomination that was started in Ghana in 1962 by Rev. James McKeown, a British missionary. The church has its global headquarters in Ghana and a presence in about 105 countries. As of 2021, the total number of members was 3,333,654 (three million, three hundred and thirty-three thousand, six hundred and fifty-four).
By establishing relationships with other churches and doing missionary work in foreign countries, there has been a worldwide movement. The mission of the church is to preach the word of God and make disciples of Christ.
2 . Secondly, CATHOLIC CHURCH OF GHANA
The Catholic Church of Ghana is part of the global Catholic Churches worldwide. The Church is under the leadership of the Pope in Rome. In Ghana, over three million of the population are Catholics. There are 20 dioceses, including four archdioceses and 1 Vicariate in Ghana. This implies that regardless of which part of the country you are in, you can find a branch to fellowship with.
3 . Thirdly, THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH GHANA
The Presbyterian Church in Ghana has been one of the oldest churches that were established in Ghana. In December 1828, the church was established in Ghana as a result of missionaries arriving in the country and spreading the Gospel. The number of people that make up Presbyterians in Ghana is 1.7 million.
This number is made up of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, Global Evangelical Church, and other smaller Reformed denominations in the Presbyterian tradition.
4 . Last but not least, METHODIST CHURCH GHANA
The Methodist Church is another Protestant denomination that was established in 1835. Since then it has gathered a lot of members across Ghana. Apart from providing spiritual growth to Ghanaians, it has also provided formal education for Ghanaians through schooling. Through these schools, most generations have been impacted.
5 . Lastly, INTERNATIONAL CENTRAL GOSPEL CHURCH (ICGC)
Also, ICGC is an evangelical charismatic church that started on the 26th of February 1984. It was founded by Pastor Mensa Otabil. The church can boast of thousands of members and has branches spread across the country.
