Who are the Game Changers in Africa

A game changer is someone or an organisation that changes the traditional way by which things are done. In Africa, there are many that are changing the status quo because they are courageous and determined and are seeking an innovative way of making Africa better. Here are some African game changers.

1 . GAME CHANGERS FOR JUSTICE: RAYMOND ZONDO

This man is at the front fighting against corruption. Raymond Zondo is a South African judge who is also serving as the Chief Justice for the country. He is a well-known corruption fighter in Africa. When former president Jacob Zuma appointed him as deputy president of the highest Court in South Africa. He ensured that the former president was investigated on the accusations of corruption levied against him. It was alleged that the former head of state gave contracts worth several million Euros to a well-known mafia network in the country.

Also, an estimated amount of $6.7bn got lost from the government’s coffers to private interest under the leadership of Jacob Zuma. Judge Zongo invited the former president to testify but he refused to comply with the invite asserting his right to silence. The judge was unperturbed by his refusal to appear at the court.

In June 2021, Jacob Zuma was sentenced to prison after failing to respond to another summon by the court. This made him the first president after post-apartheid to be sentenced to prison.

GAME CHANGERS IN AFRICA’S TECHNOLOGY – MARIEME JAMME

Mariéme is a Senegalese whose mother gave up on her. She had to be raised in different foster homes. She did not have any formal education until she was 16 when she taught herself to read and write.

Today, she is an award-winning Technologist and a BBC 100 Women nominee. Also, she is part of Britain’s  100 most influential people of African and African Caribbean Heritage.  She has been of support to many organizations such as Google, Ernst and Young, Microsoft, UN Women, Unilever, Legatum Institute, HSBC Private Banking, The Office of Gordon and Sarah Brown, The Africa Progress Panel chaired by Kofi Annan, The Obama Administration, Dow Chemical, the Argentine Government and multiple African governments.

She also started an initiative that which is Africa Gathering. It is a platform that allows businesses and investors to share ideas that can shape Africa in a positive way. Another initiative of hers is IAMTHECODE, this initiative is to gather government, investors, and businesses to support girls and young women in STEAMD (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics, and Design).

3 . GAME CHANGER FOR CLIMATE CHANGE- VANESSA NAKATE

Vanessa is a young Ugandan activist for climate change in Africa.  She has been on several platforms raising awareness of the urgency of the climate crisis. There are other game changers like Halidou Tinto, a scientist who is producing antimalarial vaccines to protect one from the disease.

Also, Ghanaian Fred Swaniker and Cameroonian Acha Leke, who met at the Californian University of Stanford, can boast of coming up with an innovative, pan-African and entrepreneurial approach to higher education, on a continent where universities do not make it to the world rankings except a few South African universities.

The African Leadership Academy (ALA), is an American-style prep school. It was founded by these two in 2005, and since then, more than 1,100 young Africans. 194 Francophones – from 52 countries have been able to gain admission to the best international universities. Especially, those of the American Ivy League including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Princeton.
