Eating fish or meat raw is becoming a popular practice in many cuisines across the globe.

There is always a risk associated with eating fish or meat raw. This is because fish or meat that are undercooked are most likely to be contaminated with bacteria. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of eating raw meat or fish.
BENEFITS
- Eating raw meat or fish does not reduce the nutritional quality as compared to when it is cooked.
- Also, eating raw fish reduces your risk of getting cancer. It has been observed that grilling or frying fish under high heat may contain different amounts of heterocyclic amine, a high intake of heterocyclic amine could lead to cancer.
- Apart from the health benefits, it also saves you time for cooking.
RISK OF FOOD-BORNE ILLNESS
The biggest risk involved in eating raw meat or fish is that you can suffer from food poisoning.
Food poisoning occurs as a result of eating fish or meat contaminated with bacteria, viruses, parasites, or toxins. Some common symptoms of food poisoning include,
- Upset stomach
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Fever
These symptoms can last from 24 hours to 7 days depending on the pathogens.
Normally, cooking meat properly destroys the potency of pathogens present in the meat.

Some raw meat dishes are on menus across the globe. Steak tartare, tuna tartare, carpaccio, meat, sushi, and many others.
HOW TO SAFELY PREPARE RAW FISH OR MEAT AT HOME
- First of all, talk to your butcher or fishmonger and explain to them what you are going to use the meat or fish for so they offer you some expert advice.
- Also, be sure to use different cutting boards if your meal requires you to use fresh vegetables or fresh fish or meat. Store raw fish or meat in sealed plastic bags in your fridge until you are ready to eat.
- Lastly, always ensure that you eat your raw foods immediately. Leaving them for hours can cause bacteria to multiply on them, making them unsafe for consumption.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Eating some raw meat or raw fish is OK if food safety protocols are followed. However, it should be noted that people with the strongest immune system always have a risk of having pathogens in their meals.
Although it’s OK to eat raw fish or meat, it should not be an everyday thing.
