EID AL- ADHA IN BRIEF
Eid al- Adha is one of the holidays and festivals of sacrifice celebrated worldwide by Muslims. It is celebrated every year to commemorate the great sacrifice done by Prophet Abraham in respect to his submission to the will of God.
It falls on the twelfth and final month in the Islamic Calendar. Celebration of Eid al- Adha varies in manner from one place to the other. Nonetheless, the same rite is performed throughout the world by all Muslims.
The general purpose of Muslims’ celebration of Eid al Adha is to enable all Muslims to realize the essence of sacrifice, sincerity, and loyalty as demonstrated by Prophet Abraham.
In view of this, and with regards to the calendar of the year, the president announced and declared Monday 11th July 2022 as a public holiday since 9th July, which marks Eid al Adha falls on Saturday.
EID AL ADHA CELEBRATION
Furthermore, the Eid al Adha celebration enabled families, loved ones, and communities to fraternize. Muslims carry out an act of sacrifice by slaughtering an animal to mark the occasion and to remember the great sacrifice of Prophet Abraham.
This sacrifice is usually carried out after the Eid prayers. Muslims go to the nearest Mosque in the morning and together offer their thanks and praises to Allah. Usually, the animals sacrificed may be a sheep, lamb, goat, cow, bulk, or camel.
This animal must be very strong and healthy. Traditionally, the slaughtered meat is divided into 3 equal parts. One part is given to the owner and his family, another to friends and the final part is given to the needy.
FURTHER THOUGHT
Moreso, as part of the celebration, Muslims give alms in the form of money, food, and clothes to the needy. Though not all Muslims are able to afford this, nonetheless, an act of charity is part of the celebration of Eid al Adha.
Some Ghanaians also attend the Eid prayers, give out donations and join Muslims to celebrate the great sacrifice. In places like Nima in Accra, they organize huge gatherings for friends and family to come and eat. This celebration covers a period of three days. Indeed, Eid al- Adha is a great day for Muslims worldwide as Christmas is for Christians.
