What is Life after Cameroon’s Paul Biya?

Paul Biya is the president of Cameroon. He is the second longest president that has governed the country. He has been ruling the country from November 6, 1982, to the present.

In recent times past, the discussion over who will succeed Cameroon’s long-time president, Paul Biya, has become a point of political contention. The president who has served for 40 years is expected to end his tenure in 2025.

There have been so many questions people are asking after he celebrated his 40th anniversary as head of state on  February 13. What happens if he is no longer able to rule in six months or a year’s time? Who would replace him? Would a clan war break out? Would the army be involved? What about the opposition? These are some questions in the minds of many but a taboo to be spoken in public.

There are speculations that his eldest son Frank Biya is being groomed to take over the role of his father as president. There have been images of Frank Biya gathering support for his own party on social media.

EXPECTED TURNS OF EVENTS

There are many opinions when it comes to Frank Biya taking over after his father. What bothers them most is how the transition of power will occur. A free and fair election is a dream come true for many Cameroonians. However if he becomes president of the people without any Democratic process, it could annoy the people and bring about conflicts.

DEMOCRATIC TRANSITION IS NECESSARY

The constitution of Cameroon states that if the president leaves power before his tenure comes to an end, the president of the senate will finally succeed him. Cameroon has had only two presidents since independence in 1961. The first president  Ahmadou Ahidjo appointed Biya as president of Cameroon in 1982 after he resigned.

Biya later consolidated power in a staged attempted coup in 1983-84 in order to eliminate his rivals. later, he introduced a multiparty system in the early 1990s, but those in opposition have alleged that there are irregularities in voting. Biya after gaining power, amended the constitution to suit him to stay in power for a long time.

Other people that may take the leadership role after Paul Biya are Alamine Ousmane Mey, Jeanne Irene Biya, and some others.
