Under the influence of their political advisers, they were convinced to expand the initiative to encompass laymen. As a result, the Irish parliament enacted the ‘Act for the Better Education of Persons Professing the Popish or Roman Catholic Religion’, leading to the establishment of Maynooth College in 1795. Several French scholars who had fled the Revolution were among the initial staff members at the college. Non-clerical students were granted admission in 1800, but, the non-clerical institution only remained in existence until 1817.
