Job Title: West Africa Regional Director
BACKGROUND
The USAID Africa Trade and Investment (ATI) program is a five-year, flexible buy-in mechanism that is run by the USAID Africa Bureau, Middle East Bureau, and Africa Regional Missions. It was made to bring together business-driven solutions that boost trade and investment in North and Sub-Saharan Africa. Also, It makes Africa’s markets stronger by creating new trade and investment partnerships, especially between the U.S. and Africa. It also works to make sure that development goals are met in all areas.
OBJECTIVES AND DUTIES
The West Regional Director is a key member of the ATI delivery team and will help the ATI program of USAID’s Africa Bureau increase trade and investment across Africa, with a focus on West Africa.
The Regional Director will be in charge of managing clients, overseeing the design and implementation of the buy-in process, and making sure that the expected outputs, results, and overall development impact are met. Under ATI’s West Africa Portfolio, the Regional Director is in charge of Activity Managers, Specialists, and Associates. Among the tasks, but not only, are:
- Manage client relationships with USAID missions, regional economic bodies, and other key stakeholders in West Africa to come up with buy-in activities and make sure they are carried out correctly.
- Give technical advice on USAID programming.
- Supervise and manage a team of ATI Activity Managers in the West Africa Portfolio to make sure that the technical activities in the portfolio are done well and to help functional teams work together.
- Manage the implementation of buy-in by figuring out what resources (LTTA and STTA) are needed for new and existing buy-in activities, working closely with the project leadership.
- Plan, assign, and oversee the work of the Activity Team, including how to deal with and solve problems.
- Work with Grants Managers to write the Annual Program Statement Addendum and other grant/procurement mechanisms that meet client priorities.
- Help the leaders of ATI plan and carry out the project work plans, quarterly and annual reports, and regular communication products that report on the results of MEL in West Africa.
- Make sure that everyone on the regional team is focused on real development results and happy clients.
REPORTING: The ATI Senior Technical Director – Africa will be in charge of how the West Africa Regional Director does his or her job.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A graduate degree in economics, business administration, social sciences, or a similar field, and at least 10 years of work experience in trade and/or investment.
- Experience running international development programs in Africa that were paid for by donors and led by the private sector; (Regional program implementation experience is preferred)
- Able to do more than one thing at once and willing to work in a fast-paced or very demanding environment.
- Experience working with businesses, the private sector, and other key business stakeholders.
- Know how to manage grants and subcontracts.
- Experience with planning, making, and running activities.
- Both writing and speaking English perfectly well.
- Excellent at writing and giving talks.
- The ability to speak French is very important.
