Job Title: Research Field Associate Scientist
Job Description
Together with AidData, the International Potato Center (CIP) is looking for a dynamic and experienced Research Field Associate Scientist to oversee an impact evaluation in Northern Ghana that looks at how sweet potato Triple S technology informational treatments affect farmers.
About the role
The International Potato Center has asked the International Water Management Institute in Ghana to host this job. The selected candidate will be based in Tamale, Ghana during the baseline data collection, initial program roll-out, and end-line data collection. The Research Field Associate Scientist will report to the Project and Marketing Manager, Country Liaison, and will work closely with academic researchers and other field staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Tracking program status and randomization compliance during initial roll-out, and spot-checking randomization compliance during the project.
- Keeping an eye on how the team that collects data is trained.
- Keeping an eye on the people working on the project and giving them help.
- Helping with the design of the survey questionnaires.
- Conducting basic qualitative research if necessary.
- Running pilot exercises.
- Helping to improve how studies are set up and how surveying tools are used.
- When necessary, negotiating contracts with survey firms
- Checking the data collected both while it is being collected and after.
- Putting the data through statistical analysis.
- Putting the results of the evaluation in context and giving background information when needed.
- Helping with the writing of project reports.
- Giving regular written updates on the project’s progress and evaluation.
- Working with local partners who are in charge of running the program being evaluated.
- Supporting outreach to policymakers in the country.
Requirements
Essential
- PhD studies in economics, social sciences, public policy, rural development, or related fields.
- Minimum of eight years of work experience in the field, with at least two to four years of experience doing evaluations and household surveys in developing countries.
- Randomized Evaluations and training in development economics, social sciences, and related fields.
- Get to know Northern Ghana by living there and doing field research there.
- Excellent management and organization skills, as well as strong math skills.
- Being able to explain positions and negotiate with high-level officials.
- Fluency in English and excellent written and spoken communication skills in English
- Flexibility, self-motivation, and the ability to handle multiple tasks well as a member of a team are all-important.
- Shown that they can handle high-level relationships with partner organizations.
- Randomized controlled trials are something you know about.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office and experience using and working together on Google Drive
- Experience with basic data analysis
- Good scientific writing skills and a track record of being published
Desirable
- If you know one or more of the main languages spoken in Northern Ghana, that’s a plus (especially Dagbani, Mampruli, Gonja, Likpakpa, and Chekusi).
- Know how to use Stata, SAS, or another program for analyzing data.
