Atta Mills’ tomb and matters arising

Disagreements over the burial site of ex-President John Evans Atta Mills in Accra, between two groups. This confusion is a result of each planning to hold a commemorating event for the 10th anniversary.

The first group is led by the late President’s former Director of Communications, Koku Anyidoho. He sees to the affairs of the Atta Mills Institute. The second group is called the John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Heritage led by Dr. Alex Segbefia, as its Board Chairman.

The final resting place of the late John Evans Atta Mills is currently causing controversy in Ghana. The family of the late Ghanaian leader has been angered by the Coastal Development Authority together with another NGO. The Atta Mills Institute is making changes to his final laying grounds without any notice to the family.

The family of the late president expresses their disappointment to the media, saying this is against custom. The brother of the late president Samuel Mills is very angry about the current situation accusing some stakeholders.

Samuel Atta Mills has accused the Atta Mills Institute and the Coastal Development Authority of tampering with the tomb of the ex-president without recourse to the family. He said; the act is culturally offensive. He again added that the family does not recognize the act by the institute with regard to the remains of the late president at the Asomdwei Park.

Again, he lamented that the Atta Mills Institute which isn’t recognized by the family and the Coastal Development Authority has tempered with the grave of President John Evans Atta Mills. He said; “They have removed the tomb, and they claim that they are rebuilding it.”

He further stated, asking a series of questions; My question is, we have a family tradition to follow. Now that they have touched the grave, how do we know the body is still there Who has the body? Why will you touch the body without informing the family head? Under whose authority? Why do they want us to always go through grief? Why will the government allow this to happen? This is an insult to the family and the nation”, Samuel Atta-Mills added.

Dr. Segbefia’s Heritage has the support of both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as well as the Atta Mills family. Mr. Anyidoho appears to be on a romp of his own, with financial and state support from the Akufo-Addo government. This they have done through the Coastal Development Authority (CODA).

The Reason for tempering

Ghana’s first Presidential mausoleum and burial ground of Ghana’s late President John Evans Atta Mills, the Asomdwee Park, is currently in a deplorable state. With the 10th anniversary on the way the need to renovate and make the place welcoming enough for visitors. People who would want to pay their respect to the late president. These recent changes to the grave of the late president according to Koku Anyidoho, the leader of the Atta Mills Institute are part of the preparations for the 10th anniversary memorial of his death.
