4 amazing facts about East Africa’s tallest building
The tallest building in East Africa is the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia a sky scraper that can be located in the heart of Ethiopia’s capital city.
The Commercial Bank houses the country’s biggest government-owned Commercial Bank. On June 20, 2007, Bereket Simon, a policy advisor and then Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia laid the first foundation stone for the building.
There was a study conducted to carry out the construction of the building. The Bank was given 18,308 square meters of land to be used for the building.
The building was completed in February 2022, which means it took 5 years and 11 months for its completion.

Fact 1
The building did cost an estimated 303.5 million USD and was erected by Chinese construction giant China State Construction Engineering Corporation. And was under the supervision of Addis Ababa University Institute of Technology (AAiT). The total trade between Africa and China exceeded $23.8 billion in 2021.

The new headquarters of the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia has a height of 198 meters. It has a total of 53 stories with two large 5-story podiums. The building covers a total area of 165,000 square meters.
It also has 4 underground and 48 above ground. It also has eight conference rooms, a waiting room for an emergency in case of a disaster, two restaurants on the top two floors, and a sightseeing tower.
Again, The building has a modern assembly hall that can fit 2,500 people at a time, and 5 small meeting halls with a capacity of 300 people, and 200 seats.
Fact 3
The tallest building is not the only skyscraper that has been built by China State Construction Engineering Corporation. The building has modern fire protection and CCTV cameras, media facilities, and 3 high-rise restored floors. Also, it is equipped with a special technology called IBM to save water and electricity.
Fact 4
More than 3000 local jobs sprung out of the construction of the building. This has created a friendship between China and Ethiopia.
