WHY ARE TEACHERS ON STRIKE?
On the 4th of June, 2022, the Teacher’s Union: The Ghana National Association of Teachers, National Association of Graduate Teachers, Coalition of Concerned Teachers Ghana, and the Teachers and Educational Workers Union commenced a strike action nationwide. This strike action is primarily due to the Government’s failure to meet the deadline of the Teachers Union’s demand for a 20% Cost of Living Allowance.
After a joint press conference by the leadership of GNAT, NAGRAT, TEWU, AND CCT-GH on the 4th of July 2022, a notice was released to inform the general public about their final decision with regard to the Government’s failure to meet their demand for a 20% Cost of Living Allowance.
They stated, “ We have been compelled under the current circumstances to publicly communicate to Ghanaians on our intention to go on strike have gone passed the June 30, 2022 deadline we gave government for the payment of Cost of Living Allowance. Consequently, we have decided to embark on strike action, effective today, Monday, July 4, 2022.
Moreso, in the communique that was released, the Teachers Union stated that their demand for the Cost of Living Allowance is greatly influenced by the high inflation rate in the country. This has led to an incessant increase in the prices of necessities like food, fuel, and other goods and services. Thus, this strike action is due to the pile of pressure on the government of Ghana as it battles the economic crisis.
The press release states, “Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, our demand is influenced by the high level of inflation in the country: the incessant skyrocketing prices of fuel, goods, and services, have eroded the already woefully so-called salary increases granted us as expressed in 4% and 7% for 2021 and 2022 respectively”.
It was further stated in the press release that, they appealed to the inept attitude of the government relative to their call for COLA. They claim that they have severally, and on different platforms and times made this call to the government yet it has fallen on deaf ears.
It states, “ We wish to use this forum to express our displeasure over this insensitivity of the government regarding our demand. Hence, their final decision was this: “By this, we are informing the general public that, we are withdrawing all our services in all the Pre-tertiary educational space (Teaching and Non-Teaching Staff).
IN CONCLUSION
Concerns were raised by some stakeholders that despite the fact Teacher’s demand for their Cost of Living Allowance is legitimate, they should take this as an opportunity to fight for a permanent solution to salvage the challenges faced by teachers.
The government assured to reach an agreement with the Teachers Union yet it seems their calls have fallen on deaf ears. In view of this, and in order to cushion the government on the current economic crisis and the challenges Teachers are facing, the Teachers anion have declared to embark on a nationwide strike effectively, Monday, 4th July 2022.
