WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?
For females especially, the breast is one of the vital body parts. As such, it needs to be taken very care of. There are several diseases the breast is prone to. Among these diseases is the most prominent one called breast cancer. Many women, and to some extent, men, are suffering from breast cancer.
This could be a result of several factors. To help reduce the risk and to care for the breast, this article will provide you with a brief detail of breast cancer, its symptoms and causes, and how to reduce the risk.
BREAST CANCER IN BRIEF
Breast cancer can be defined as a disease where the cells in the breast grow at full throttle or abnormally. When it happens like that, the breast divides in an uncontrolled way and creates a mass of tissue in the breast known as a tumor.
This tissue can also travel to other parts of your body and create a new tumor. When this happens, it is referred to as metastasis. Breast Cancer can develop at any age or usually at age 50, and women also have a high chance of developing breast cancer.
There are different kinds of breast cancer: Infiltrating ductal carcinoma, Infiltrating lobular carcinoma, Triple-negative breast cancer, Inflammatory breast cancer, Paget’s disease of the breast, etc. All these types depend on the part of the cell in the breast that turn into cancer.
SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER
The signs and symptoms of breast cancer vary from one person to the other. Usually, some people don’t even get any of these signs or symptoms at all. Here is a list of some possible symptoms of breast cancer.
- Feeling pain in any area of the breast
- Change in the size or shape of the breast
- Feeling a mass or lump in the breast or under your arm(armpit)
- Swelling of the breast
- Feeling pain in the nipple with some discharge other than breast milk or blood
CAUSES OF BREAST CANCER
Experts say that breast cancer develops as a result of a combination of factors. Though the exact causes are not much known some research done to show that there are some risk factors that can increase your chances of developing breast cancer. Below is a list of such risk factors or causes of breast cancer.
- Age: usually those 55 years of age
- Sex: most especially women
- Hereditary: family history and genetics
- Excessive smoking and drinking of alcohol
- Obesity can also increase the chances of breast cancer
- Being exposed to radiation for a long period of time
IN CONCLUSION
There are several options to select from when it comes to treating and reducing the risk of breast cancer. Usually, when it becomes severe, some of the treatments recommended infusing surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted drug therapy.
Usually, women get frightened when they are diagnosed with breast cancer. They even sometimes feel hopeless. Though breast cancer can be frustrating it’s important to get resources available to you.
Speak to a doctor about your treatment options. Be vigilant for the signs and symptoms and also talk with others going through the same pain. Such options will help relieve the pain and keep you comforted, satisfied, and optimistic.
