ICFJ USA Professional Fellows Program for Emerging Media Leaders 2024–2025. The opportunity is available for international students and is fully funded. The scholarship enables fellowship-level programs in media studies and journalism, which are offered at the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ). The scholarship deadline is March 11, 2024.

Regarding the Fellowship:

The Professional Fellows Program for Emerging Media Leaders (PFP EML) is a two-way exchange program that the U.S. Government funds and that ICFJ manages on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. This initiative fosters collaboration among media professionals, such as journalists, technologists, and media entrepreneurs, from Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States. The main goal is to use digital tools to improve the quality of news and information distribution for the benefit of the public.

Participants will be selected through a competitive process from a group of media professionals in 25 Latin American and Caribbean nations, as well as the United States. The program provides Latin American and Caribbean Fellows with opportunities to work with U.S. media companies, participate in entrepreneurship projects, and improve their skills in investigative journalism, fact-checking, and podcasting. Moreover, participants will acquire abilities that are not exclusive to journalism, such as developing enduring business concepts.

Criteria for eligibility:

  • Age Criteria: Applicants must be aged between 25 and 40.
  • Residency requirement: Applicants must be residing and employed in their country of origin when applying.
  • Professional Experience Requirement: Candidates must have a minimum of two years of professional experience at the time of application.
  • Complete Application: Submit all necessary documentation by the application deadline.
  • Virtual Participation Requirement: Applicants must commence the Professional Fellows Program remotely in 2024 and physically attend in the United States in 2025.
  • Visa Requirement: Must qualify for a U.S. J-1 visa.
  • Repatriation Obligation: Required to return to their native nation upon program completion.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluent in spoken and written English at the time of application.

Criteria for disqualification:

Individuals who meet the following criteria are ineligible for the Professional Fellows Program:

  • U.S. Citizenship: Individuals who are either U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
  • Spousal Restriction: Individuals married to U.S. citizens and/or permanent residents of the United States.
  • Current Programs: Individuals engaged in academic, training, or research programs in the United States when applying.
  • International Residency: Refers to those living or working in a country other than their native country when applying.
  • Previous Exchange Programs: People who have taken part in a U.S. government-sponsored exchange visitor program but have not completed the two-year residency requirement in their home country.
  • Permanent status application: individuals who have applied for U.S. permanent status within the last three years.
  • Eligibility: Employees and their families of non-profit organizations involved in managing the Professional Fellows Program for the U.S. Department of State.
  • Local U.S. Mission Employees are people who work for U.S. embassies or the U.S. Agency for International Development abroad. This coverage extends during their employment and for one year after termination.
  • Immediate Family: Spouses and dependent children of U.S. Department of State and U.S. Agency for International Development workers are considered immediate family members for one year after the employee’s termination.
