Concerning the University of Oxford

The University of Oxford is an autonomous institution of higher learning located in Oxford, Oxfordshire, England. It is recognised as one of the world’s leading universities. Oxford is situated along the upper course of the River Thames, known as the Isis by locals, approximately 50 miles (80 km) north-northwest of London.

There is proof that in the early twelfth century, Oxford had schools. Perhaps because English students were forbidden from enrolling at the University of Paris starting in 1167, a university had made a strong name for itself by the end of the century. Oxford was established after the University of Paris’ model, first offering faculty in the liberal arts, law, medicine, and theology.

In the 13th century, the university in Oxford became stronger, especially in theology, due to the founding of many monastic orders, mainly Dominicans and Franciscans. Initially, the institution did not have its own premises and instead held lectures in rented halls or churches.

The different colleges in Oxford were initially established as endowed residences for poor students. The scholarships were mainly designed for individuals with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in arts who required financial aid to pursue their studies for an advanced degree. University College, the first of these colleges, was established in 1249. Balliol College was established in 1263, whereas Merton College was founded in 1264.
