Applicable Nationalities for CERN Technical Studentships:

This award is open to those who are citizens of a country that is a member or associate member of CERN.

The CERN convention was ratified in 1953 by the 12 original member states: Belgium, Denmark, France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Yugoslavia. It officially came into effect on 29 September 1954. Austria joined the Organization in 1959, followed by Spain (1961-1969, re-entered in 1983), Portugal (1985), Finland (1991), Poland (1991), Czechoslovak Republic (1992), Hungary (1992), Bulgaria (1999), Israel (2014), Romania (2016), and Serbia (2019). After gaining independence in 1993, the Czech Republic and Slovak Republic both resumed their membership in CERN. In 1961, Yugoslavia withdrew from CERN.

What is the definition of membership?

Member States has distinct responsibilities and advantages. They provide financial support for both the capital and operating expenses of CERN’s programs and have representation in the Council, which is responsible for making all significant decisions about the Organization and its activities.

Which countries are our Member States?

CERN currently consists of 23 Member States, namely Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Cyprus, Estonia, and Slovenia are currently Associate Member States in the preliminary phase of the membership process. Brazil, Croatia, India, Latvia, Lithuania, Pakistan, Türkiye, and Ukraine are designated as Associate Member States.

Requirements for CERN Technical Studentships:

The following individuals are eligible for a CERN internship opportunity:

  • Citizenship requirement: Applicants must hold nationality in a country that is either a member state or an associate member state of CERN. The list of eligible countries can be seen on the official CERN website.
  • Academic Progress: By the October 2024 selection round, it is required that you have successfully finished a minimum of 18 months of your undergraduate studies, either in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
  • Active Student Status: Maintain your enrollment as a full-time student throughout your internship.
  • Language Skills: Exhibit exceptional mastery in either English or French.

Procedure for Applying to CERN Technical Studentships:

Required application materials for application:

  • Curriculum Vitae: Provide a concise overview of your proficiency and expertise in either English or French.
  • Official record of academic performance: Please submit a recent, unencrypted copy of your academic transcript displaying your grades.
  • Reference Letters: A letter from a university professor is necessary (compulsory).
  • You have the opportunity to send an additional reference letter from a former supervisor during your previous internship.

  • Collect all PDF papers prior to commencing your application. Reference letters may be uploaded at a later time.
  • Ensure that the “Education” and “Experience” portions of your application are detailed and precise.
  • Anticipate responses in advance – as there is a restricted timeframe for submission.
  • Each application necessitates distinct document submissions, even when applying for many positions.
  • Due Date: Please ensure that you submit your application together with all the necessary supporting documents no later than July 29th, 2024, by 11:59 PM Central
  • European Time (CET). Submissions received after the designated deadline will not be taken into consideration.

Process of selecting.

  • External experts may assess your application throughout the process.
  • The final evaluation by experts from CERN takes place from July 29th to early October.
  • During this period, you may receive communication requesting an interview or additional information.
  • The outcome of the selection process will be conveyed no later than October 31st, 2024.

Internship Contract:

CERN is unable to sign external documents if your university mandates a special agreement. To obtain the traineeship agreement, you must utilize the one given by them, which can be obtained upon request.
