We conduct in-depth investigations into unlawful, unsustainable, and unethical practices, and we actively encourage improvements in policy-making, corporate governance, and fishery management, as well as raising consumer awareness to incentivize market-driven solutions.

Overview of the Position

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for a highly motivated and experienced individual to join the Environmental Justice Foundation’s (EJF) team. In the country, EJF strives to safeguard marine biodiversity and ecosystems, as well as to promote sustainable, equitable, and legal fishing. You will be joining EJF’s expanding worldwide team, which is striving to ensure that natural habitats and environments can sustain, and are sustained by, the communities that rely on them for fundamental needs and livelihoods.

  • Travel within Liberia will be required, including to four coastal areas where EJF has project offices: Grand Bassa, Grand Cape Mount, Grand Kru, and Margibi.
  • Your work, reporting to EJF’s West Africa Programme Coordinator, will be critical to the timely and cost-effective completion of EJF’s EU-funded Communities for Fisheries project in the country.
  • You will supervise and mentor local workers, supervising their work in accordance with agreed-upon key performance indicators (KPIs), and ensuring extremely cost-effective and efficient project execution.
  • You will oversee substantial involvement with local partners and government agencies, as well as successful project outreach via local and national media and social media channels.
  • Your position will span many sectors and skill sets, from research and field investigations to capacity-building, outreach, and advocacy.
  • You will collaborate directly with EJF’s film unit, communications team, and other colleagues in London and around the world, as well as offer highly comprehensive frequent reporting to senior management.

Duties:

  • Coordination, direction, and support of EJF’s operations in Liberia to document, expose, and eradicate illicit, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, improve community management of small-scale fisheries, and protect marine and coastal habitats.
  • Track and analyze outcomes in relation to agreed-upon KPIs and commitments, as well as uncover synergies and potential for learning sharing.
  • Close, effective cooperation with partner organizations working with EJF in Liberia is required.
  • Manage a strong team of 25 EJF professionals and volunteers in Liberia.
  • Support internal and external reporting of program impacts, as well as budget expenditure tracking, to ensure maximum efficiency.
  • Ensure that our lobbying with high-level decision-makers is persuasive, appropriate, and effective by collaborating with EJF’s larger campaigns team to provide relevant information and outcomes and harness worldwide support for our goals.

Required Qualifications or Experience

  • A demonstrated track record of leading and delivering high-quality, high-impact development and/or environmental programs, as well as at least six years of experience working in a related field.
  • Understanding and experience with institutional donors, grant reporting, and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Strong and dynamic leadership abilities, including the ability to mentor and drive EJF’s local team and project partners, while being adaptable to changing needs and opportunities.
  • Work well under duress and in remote locations.
  • Excellent oral and writing communication abilities, as well as the ability to deliver excellent presentations to a variety of high-level audiences, media, and local partners, and communities.
  • Budget understanding and the requirement for the most efficient and effective use of resources; developing results-driven initiatives alongside rigorous monitoring and evaluation of effects.
  • Resourceful, capable of bringing abilities in capacity building, training, and relationship management to ensure the long-term effect and sustainability of EJF and its partners’ activities.
  • A great negotiator who can be polite and tactful to achieve the desired results. You are culturally sensitive and have a genuine interest in working with communities to better their lives and safeguard the environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to operate efficiently in a fast-paced, pressured setting are required.
  • Experience working with national partners to ensure agreed-upon activities are completed on time and within budget.
  • A genuine desire to collaborate with communities to improve their lives and conserve their environment, as well as a dedication to EJF’s Mission and aims of protecting people, wildlife, and our shared world.

Desirable characteristics include:

  • Excellent knowledge of industrial and small-scale fisheries management and governance.
