GOVERNMENT AGREES TO PAY PUBLIC SECTOR WORKERS 15% COLA

On the 4th of July, 2022, news circulated indicating the Teachers Union’s decision to embark on strike action. Days after this decision by the Teachers Union the Association of Nurses and Midwifery also released a notice demanding an increase in Salary. All these decisions were to ensure that the government pays The Teachers Union as well as other public sector workers 20% Cost of Living.

Their decision and subsequent actions were a result of the high inflation rate in the country. The government, however,  after this protest from the public sector, agreed to meet up with Labour Unions to finalise the issue relating to the 20% Cost of Living Allowance.

AGREEMENT ON COST OF LIVING ALLOWANCE

After a back and forth between the Labour Unions and the government, the two parties have however agreed on a 15% Cost of Living Allowance after several deliberations. During a press briefing on Thursday,  14th of July, 2022, the  Employment and Labour Relations Minister,  Ignatius Baffour Awuah, the  Secretary General of the Trade Union Congress, and the finance Minister, together with some other signatories, came together to agree on a fixed percentage for the Cost of Living Allowance.

Moreover, a report from the meeting was brought out during a press briefing. The Employment and Labour Relations Minister, Ignatius Baffour Awuah said, “ The Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) will be paid at a rate of 15 per cent of base pay. He also added that the effective date of the payment of COLA is 1st July 2022”. In view of this, and as part of the agreement,  all industrial actions underway and threats of same should be called off immediately and Labour should return to work forthwith.
