ROLE: Environmental and Forestry Specialist
Project Description
SOCODEVI helps to improve community living conditions by assisting in the formation and growth of inclusive and sustainable cooperative or mutual companies.
The TogetHER Project seeks to empower women and young people (18–30 years old) in Ghana’s rural cocoa-producing areas of Ashanti and the Western North. Training and assistance will promote communal savings, entrepreneurship, and financial inclusion, all while contributing to the cocoa sector’s long-term sustainability and the equitable distribution of economic advantages and possibilities. This project intends to close gender disparities in the cocoa sector and increase resource flows at the community level, allowing cocoa cooperatives to become more inclusive, foster equal and effective involvement for women and youth, and truly sustain their empowerment. SOCODEVI is leading the way in converting current cooperatives to be more inclusive and resilient through this project, in conjunction with all levels of the Ghanaian government.
Job Description
- Reporting to the Project Director and working closely with the Principal Coordinator, Finance Specialist, and the Environment team in the SOCODEVI Head Office, the Environmental and forestry Specialist will work in partnership with the Ghanaian Ministry, Departments, and Institutions involved in the Cocoa Value Chain to provide technical assistance to cooperatives in order to achieve the project targets, which include but are not limited to, Understanding, comprehending, and producing neo-traditional cocoa products
- Provide policy advice on forestry and biodiversity protection concerns, as well as analysis of challenges affecting the cocoa sector;
- Give technical advice on project activities that involve forests to make sure that work is done in each output area according to the project document and work plan, and that it is done quickly, correctly, and efficiently.
- Liaise with relevant members of staff, consultants, Socodevi technical staff, COCOBOD, and the Forestry Commission as needed to ensure that project outcomes are implemented efficiently and effectively.
- Assist with the timely submission of project/progress reports, as well as the compilation of other reports as needed.
Required Qualifications or Experience
- This position necessitates a solid foundation (at least a B.Sc.) in Environmental Management, Forestry, or Natural Resource Management, as well as 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in Ghana’s forestry and agriculture sectors.
- Experience and/or knowledge of environmental management systems, farmer training, agroforestry practices, GIS, and other data management tools and systems would be advantageous.
- Experience with policy issues relating to forestry and biodiversity conservation, as well as analysis of issues affecting the cocoa sector, such as tree tenure rights, land tenure, land use planning, and so on.
- Capability to communicate complex information in understandable and relevant language for various stakeholders, particularly communities.
- Proven project coordination abilities, as well as the ability to manage and prioritize a diversified workload within a team,
- An excellent mastery of the English language is required.
- Fieldwork will be required of the successful candidate.
- This position entails significant responsibility and autonomy, as well as strong organizational skills, interpersonal and networking abilities, and a willingness to work as part of a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities, particularly via email.
- Computer proficiency (Windows, MS Office, Sharepoint).

- SOCODEVI provides competitive pay, a comprehensive benefits package, and a fantastic work environment.
- Contract for one year, renewed annually;
- Regular working hours: 8 hours each day, Monday through Friday, for a total of 40 hours per week; salary paid monthly (on the 30th of the month); 20 working days of annual leave every calendar year. Annual leave is accrued at a rate of 1.67 days per month;
- Periodic meetings could be held in Kumasi, Wiawso, or Accra; working in the evenings and on weekends may occur when necessary but should not be frequent; the successful candidate agrees to go to the districts on a regular basis.
