GOVERNMENT SET TO MEET LABOUR UNIONS ON 20% SALARY INCREASE
On Monday, July 4th, 2022, the Teachers Union announced their decision to bark on strike action. This was a result of the government’s failure to pay the 20% Cost of Living Allowance they demanded.
After this announcement the Labour Unions, are however expecting to have a meeting with the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations as well as other stakeholders by Wednesday 13th July 2022, in relation to the government’s inability to pay the allowance demanded.
Moreover, during an interview with Citi News, Angel Carbonu, the President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers, stated that the Labour Union is looking forward to significant feedback from the government. He said, “I hope Wednesday’s meeting will arrive at a concrete answer to the demands that we have made, and not appeal to us that it is in the pipeline “. After this, however, the National Labour Commission issued a statement urging Teachers to rescind their decision and make way for negotiations.
Moreso, the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Bright Wireko- Brobbey stated that the government is aware of the concerns of teachers.
However, the government is appealing to the unions to return to the classroom as they await a meeting to negotiate with the government. He added also, that the government needs more time in order to address the concerns of teachers and other Labour unions. He states that times are hard because of the global challenges and hence, the Labour Union should impress on their members as the government is doing its best to best to address their grievances.
IN CONCLUSION
The Labour Union nonetheless, has not released any notice that they have declined their decision to embark on strike action. The strike still continues, though the government has assured them that they would meet the leaders for negotiations and settle this issue on the 20% salary increase for Labour Unions, especially the Teachers Union.
