The Rhodes Scholarship, established in 1902, is the oldest international scholarship program that allows exceptional young individuals from many countries to pursue studies at the University of Oxford. The grant is a fully financed postgraduate opportunity that allows gifted individuals from all over the world to pursue studies at the University of Oxford on a full-time basis.

The Origin of the Rhodes Scholarship

The Rhodes Scholarship was created in 1902 through Cecil John Rhodes’ will, demonstrating great foresight for that era.  The Rhodes Scholarships, established over a century ago, are the oldest and most esteemed international scholarship program globally. They provide exceptional young individuals from various countries the opportunity to pursue full-time postgraduate studies at the University of Oxford, which was ranked first internationally in the Times Higher Education rankings for 2017 and 2018.

The scholarship was established to choose young leaders globally who would build relationships of mutual understanding and fellowship by studying together at Oxford for the sake of humanity.

Our academic scholarship’s esteemed reputation is based on the significant contributions made by our scholars and the qualities required in a Rhodes Scholar: intellectual excellence, compassion, leadership skills, and a commitment to public service. This remains as relevant today as it was over a hundred years ago, regardless of the controversial history of our founder, Cecil Rhodes.

What does the Rhodes Scholarship entail?

Brilliant young people from all around the world can study full-time at the University of Oxford thanks to the fully funded Rhodes Scholarship, a postgraduate scholarship.

What expenses does the Rhodes Scholarship include?

The Rhodes Scholarship includes coverage of Oxford University course fees and an annual stipend. The stipend for the 2023–24 academic year is £19,092 per annum (£1,591 per month). Scholars are responsible for covering all living expenses, including accommodation, with this stipend. This does not provide adequate coverage for partners or dependents.

The Conditions of Tenure document provides specific information on allowed degree combinations and the duration of the scholarship, which varies depending on the chosen course. For instance, scholars pursuing a DPhil (PhD) at Oxford can receive funding for up to three years of fees and stipends.

Upon being chosen for the scholarship, the Rhodes Trust will reimburse the application fee for studying at the University of Oxford. The Trust will pay for the student visa fee and the related International Health Surcharge (IHS) for international students to access the UK’s National Health Service. The Rhodes Trust will provide two economy-class flights for travel to and from the UK at the start and completion of study in Oxford.
