Study In Malaysia: University of Malaya Scholarships 2024

The University of Malaya has nearly 4,000 international students from more than 80 countries who are eligible to apply for scholarships and financial aid for the 2024-2025 academic year. We have meticulously outlined all the procedures for applying for the University of Malaya scholarships for the academic year 2024-2025.

University of Malaya information

Universiti Malaya, Malaysia’s oldest institution, is located on a 922-acre campus in the southwest of Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia.

Established on September 28, 1905, in Singapore as the King Edward VII College of Medicine, it later became the Universiti Malaya on October 8, 1949, by the amalgamation of the King Edward VII College of Medicine and Raffles College, which was formed in 1928.

Universiti Malaya gets its name from the term ‘Malaya,’ which was the name of the country at that time. The Carr-Saunders Commission on University Education in Malaya suggested establishing Universiti Malaya in 1948 to create a shared space for people of different races, religions, and economic backgrounds to collaborate. Universiti Malaya must acknowledge that it is a university serving Malaya.

The university experienced significant expansion in its first decade, leading to the formation of two autonomous divisions on January 15, 1959, one in Singapore and the other in Kuala Lumpur. In 1960, the administration of the two territories expressed their intention to elevate the status of the divisions to that of a national university. The legislation was enacted in 1961, and Universiti Malaya was founded on January 1, 1962.

Universiti Malaya marked the appointment of its inaugural Chancellor, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, on June 16, 1962. Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj was also the first prime minister of the country. Professor Oppenheim, a world-renowned mathematician, served as the inaugural vice-chancellor.

Presently, His Royal Highness Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah of Perak Darul Ridzuan serves as the Chancellor of the University of Malaya.
