Advantages of the scholarship:

Monthly Stipend:

Recipients will be granted a competitive monthly stipend of JPY 220,000 to cover necessary costs associated with research endeavors, such as materials, as well as living expenses in Japan.

Initial Investment:

An extra amount of JPY 120,000 is assigned to cover a fraction of the initial living expenses upon arrival in Japan.

Air transport for both the outbound and return journeys:

Grantees will benefit from the convenience of receiving round-trip economy-class flights between the international airport closest to their home and Tokyo, Japan.

Insurance:

All fellows are provided with comprehensive international travel insurance that covers medical care and death benefits.

Educational Excursion:

As part of the program, recipients of the fellowship are asked to participate in a unique study tour, which will enhance their insight and knowledge of Japan.

Important:

• The fellowship will only be awarded during the stipulated period stated in the grant letter, and it cannot be extended or shortened.
• The grant is only available to the person mentioned in the grant letter. The MIF will not have any involvement in the immigration procedures, flight tickets, or accommodation fees for the family, companions, etc. of the selected applicant.

Eligible Nationalities:

This fellowship is available to students from any country.

Requirements for eligibility:

• Non-Japanese applicants who share the basic values of the MIF and fulfill the specified criteria are welcome to submit their application documents.
• Prospective applicants are required to get a formal acceptance letter from a Japanese host institution before submitting their application.
• A Ph.D. (doctoral degree) is required.
• Applicants must be no older than 45 years of age at the time of application, and their birth year must be in or after 1979.
• Fluency in either English or Japanese is mandatory.
• Prospective candidates must not have prior or current instances of prolonged sojourns in Japan, except for brief visits for purposes such as tourism or attending conferences.
• Prospective applicants must possess a profession in their countries of origin, pledge to go back after finishing the fellowship, and actively contribute to the advancement of their respective nations.

Areas of Research

Preference will be allocated to areas of study such as natural science, engineering, and medicine.

Duration of Fellowship

The duration of the fellowship is six months, commencing in April 2025 and concluding in March 2026. Applicants are required to indicate the exact starting and ending months in their application form (e.g., from September 2025 to February 2026).

Japanese Host Institution

Applicants are given the autonomy to select a host institution in Japan, which can be a university, a national research institute, or a comparable facility in the private sector, to conduct their study. Before applying, it is crucial to obtain approval from the host school. The MIF does not offer guidance or suggestions on host institutions in Japan.

• List Ph.D., Master’s, and Bachelor’s degrees.
• If the original documents are not in English, please provide English translations. Self-translations will not be approved.

Letter of Invitation:

• Authored and endorsed by your hosting professor/scholar in Japan.
• Validate acceptance of the fellowship duration, research endeavor, and supply of amenities and lodging.

To accommodate professors/scholars in Japan:

• Please include your complete name, institutional affiliation, and contact details (postal code, address, telephone number, and email address) in both English and Japanese.
