Study Abroad: World Bank Scholarships 2024–25

The World Bank’s Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC) supports the organization’s objective of creating innovative, cutting-edge methods for knowledge exchange and capacity building in developing nations by awarding scholarships to scholars and students.

It plays a significant role in the World Bank’s initiatives to support shared prosperity and economic development in poor nations by funding human resource development, capacity building, and education.

Since 1982, the DEC’s scholarship programs have contributed to the formation of a pool of more than 6,000 skilled and knowledgeable scholars and development professionals, who have transformed their nations and had a beneficial influence on coming generations.

Active Programs

Through the JJ/WBGSP or Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program, more than 6,000 mid-career professionals from 160 developing nations as well as Japan have been able to finish graduate degrees in development-related subjects since 1987. Each year, the Government of Japan provides all funding for the JJ/WBGSP.

Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program (RSMFP): This program has supported young researchers in development-related fields on a broad range of themes since 1982. As it is, the program links up-and-coming young researchers with World Bank data resources, research, and technical know-how. Selected fellows work on DEC research projects, receive formal training, and take part in research important to policy while living and working as a cohort at the World Bank in Washington, D.C.

Joint Graduate Scholarship Program of the World Bank and Japan

Citizens of specific developing nations who have supported their governments’ development efforts in the past and have relevant professional expertise are eligible to apply to the JJ/WBGSP for master’s programs in development-related fields.

JJ/WBGSP provides scholarships for 53 participating master’s programs at 27 institutions in the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan in important development fields such as infrastructure management, tax policy, and economic policy management, subject to funding availability.

Please be aware that you will not be able to apply for a JJ/WBGSP scholarship in 2024 if you are not accepted into one of these 52 participating master’s programs.

Benefits of the Scholarships

The following advantages are given to the recipient of the JJ/WBGSP scholarship:

  • The cost of your graduate program tuition and the basic health insurance you purchase from the university.
  • a monthly subsistence grant to cover all living expenditures (housing, food, books, etc.) while on campus throughout the scholarship period. Depending on the host nation, the allowance’s amount varies.
