The Ahafo Mine is in the Brong-Ahafo region, and the Akyem Mine is in the Eastern region. Both are owned by Newmont’s Africa Operations. About This Role

- Join the Long-Term Planning team as a Senior Engineer – Long-Term Planning (LTP). Your job as a Senior Engineer – Long-Term Planning (LTP) will be to improve operational and project results by improving mine productivity and costing technical expertise and using the best tools and methods in the industry.
In this position, you’ll
Safety, health, and the environment
- Applying Newmont’s Health, Safety, and Environment systems, policies, and protocols will help you meet your own goals or provide support services.
- Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of all Mine Engineers who work for him or her or who are assigned to him or her.
- Meet the LTP goals and Newmont mining standards, including geotechnical and operational physical standards, to keep mining operations safe and within the law.
- Make sure that all legal, environmental, and workplace health, safety, and risk management standards and best practices are being followed.
Mine Planning
- Develop a Life of Mine (LOM) strategic plan to find out if future mining in Africa is safe, efficient, and cost-effective. This will be done by keeping an eye on:
- LOM Scheduling (mining sequencing)
- Then, Blending of the LOM Metal Process
- Modeling LOM costs with Xeras
- Also, Give technical advice to all Mine Planning teams in the area so that mining operations can be fully optimized.
- Figure out the plan for the LOM Mine’s final numbers.
- Moreover, Make the LOM Cost model at a high level.
- Find out what the LOM cost model’s final outputs are.
- Additionally, Manage the software and resources for mine planning to meet business section goals.
- More so, Make a plan for the stockpiling strategy.
- Share the developed LOM scenario plan mining assumptions, LOM mining plan, and costs with the mine site and the rest of the area.
- Finally, Talk to the Site planning team to make sure plans are in line with the site’s overall strategies.
Tool Management
- Start optimizing the pit and make sure it is in line with the current site parameters.
- You can design or change pits, dumps, and stockpiles with the MineSight pit expansion tool.
Stakeholder Management
- Talk to the right Subject Matter Experts at Global Headquarters to find out how best practices can be used in the LTP approach.
- Work with the Site and Regional Finance and Business Planning teams, as well as the S&ER leadership, to make sure that scenario planning and project goals are met.
- Facilitate requests from outside stakeholders to keep mine planning processes running smoothly and efficiently and to quickly address and solve problems.
People
- Supervise the staff member(s) you’ve been given by:
- Also, Help the mining engineers who work at the operations grow and learn.
- Visit sites and help engineers talk to each other, as well as help people plan their own careers.
- Recommend relevant and additional training courses and ways to improve.
Your Checklist of Training, Skills, and Experience:
Formal Qualifications (including Professional Registrations):
- Bachelors’ degree in Mine Engineering.
Additional Knowledge:
- Experience with strategic and long-term mine planning, production support, mine operations, and mine design at large and diverse mine sites, with a preference for experience in conventional hard rock gold open pit.
- Strong people skills, the ability to persuade, and a high level of cultural sensitivity and awareness.
- Excellent ability to talk to people and persuade them (oral, written, listening).
- Self-starter with good skills in facilitating and giving talks.
- Experience in operations with complex multi-mine, multi-process situations is preferred, as is knowledge of mine methods, mine design, production scheduling (both strategic and tactical), equipment selection, reserve estimation, and economic evaluations.
- High level of skill in using mine planning software, including optimization techniques and experience with Deswik, Geovia Whittle, MineSight, or Maptek mine design and scheduling packages.
- Unit costing and financial modeling techniques for analyzing resources and reserves, as well as how to use and change project financial models. Experience with the Xeras cost-estimating tool is a plus.
- Knowing how to explore, how to estimate mineral inventories and how to estimate resources.
- Strong skills at solving problems and seeing things in 3D.
Experience:
- At least seven to eight years of experience in Surface Mining in a large-scale Open Pit mining environment.
- Experience with Advanced Mine Planning in a variety of mining applications.
- Extensive site-mine planning experience in multi-mine, multi-process situations.
- Strong background in evaluating projects.
Technical Skills:
- Strong technical skills with equipment, systems, and software used for surveys.
- Good computer skills, including MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), MS Project, Mine Planning/Surveying Systems (such as Minesight, SURPAC, and Minescheduled), and CAD-based mine design applications.
- Good at writing reports.
