Job Title: Shea Butter Analyst

Company Description

Capacity Enhancement and Community Support LGB (CAPECS) is a Ghanaian non-profit organization that provides opportunities for youth, women, and marginalized groups while also aiming to relieve poverty in Ghana using proven and tested creative and market-based techniques. Since 2017, CAPECS has been working to strengthen vulnerable people and communities in order to increase their livelihood opportunities, promote entrepreneurship and skills development for women and youth, promote household economic security, improve health and nutrition, and education, and protect the rights of women and children.

Position Description

CAPECS is undertaking the Youth in Shea Oil Production (Youth-SHOP) initiative in Ghana’s Upper West Region in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation. The Youth-SHOP project is a groundbreaking initiative that aims to transform Ghana’s shea ecosystem. The project’s primary goal is to develop long-term jobs for young people, particularly women, in Northern Ghana’s shea value chain.

In light of this, CAPECS is looking for an experienced research scientist to do microbiological and biophysical studies on shea butter, with the ultimate goal of creating edible cooking oil from shea butter that meets local and international requirements.

Objectives of the assignment

The assignment’s ultimate goal is to create edible cooking oil from shea butter by finding the method that permits shea oil to remain in an oil condition (no coagulation) when stored at room temperature.

The precise goals are as follows:

  • To identify and eliminate/neutralize coagulation characteristics in shea butter so that it remains liquid at all times.
  • To describe the process for removing or neutralizing the coagulation qualities of shea butter.
  • To provide a practice-based instruction manual on how to eliminate/neutralize the coagulation qualities in shea butter such that it remains a permanent liquid at room temperature.
  • To provide young women with a Training of Trainers (ToT) based on the curriculum.

Scope of Work

The Scientist is responsible for the following duties.

  • Analyze shea butter thoroughly to evaluate its coagulation qualities.
  • Determine how to remove/neutralize the coagulation qualities.
  • Explain how to remove or neutralize the coagulation qualities.
  • Create a training handbook for removing/neutralizing the coagulation qualities of shea butter.
  • Deliver a practice-based Training of Trainers (ToT) for young women utilizing the training manual.

Deliverables

  • Removal/neutralization of coagulation characteristics in shea butter.
  • Procedure training manual including exercises.
  • ToT (Training of Trainers) for young women.

Assignment Timeline

  • The assignment must be completed within 6 months (maximum) of the date of agreement.

Fee

  • Indicate the approximate cost of completing the assignment. The two sides must debate, negotiate, and agree on the budget.

Required Qualifications or Experience

  • Expertise in key subjects such as food science, biochemistry, and industrial chemistry is required.
  • Execution of the assignment required competence.
  • Own a well-established laboratory or be linked with a suitable institutional laboratory.
  • Experienced research experts who have completed similar jobs in the past.
  • Capability to get or create the reactive agents required for analyzing and eliminating the coagulation qualities found in shea butter.
  • Capability to offer practice-based processes training for young women.
