Job Description
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) wants a PRODUCTION MANAGER for the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Project.
The Position
Throughout the project’s life cycle, the successful candidate will be in charge of technical management, supervision, and control of the optimal BSF production processes.
Primary Responsibilities
- Supervise all activities at the BSF facility.
- Measure critical project performance indicators.
- Creating technical reports on activities, including monthly and annual reports.
- Working to improve insect growth and survival.
- Ensure that all production inputs are accessible on schedule.
- Maintain a clean and orderly workspace.
- Organize and obtain resources for scheduled activities and trials.
- Providing technical and professional support to the BBEST Project Team
- Working to improve BBEST Project performance
- Overseeing, analyzing, and directing production functions for commercial farming of Black Soldier Fly
- Conducting research and innovation in insect production to achieve commercial goals;
- Management and control of procedures and systems for processing food waste utilizing insects and generating commodity products (frass and insect protein), including quality assurance;
- Improving methods and procedures to boost efficiency and production in waste processing and commercial BSF farming.
- Lead and manage the production team to improve production outcomes.
- Creating systems to forecast, plan, monitor, and analyse data for insect rearing, including productivity metrics and targets.
- Plan and manage insect production activities to achieve targets and client commitments in terms of output, quality, cost, time, and manpower;
- Managing the expansion of the company’s BSF manufacturing capacity to achieve strategic growth targets.
Required Skill or Experience
Preferred Qualifications.
- Master’s degree, especially in Entomology, Agriculture, Food Security, Waste Management, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of three years of experience in project planning, management, and budgeting.
- Effective training and facilitation skills.
- Has previously worked with edible insects.
Core Competencies
- Solid understanding of black soldier fly larvae physiology, particularly in relation to the use of municipal waste as a substrate, with a focus on bioconversion, substrate reduction, sanitary issues, greenhouse gas emissions, and production models and logistical issues for managing BSFL bioconversion.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Have strong leadership abilities.
- Excellent communication skills in English (Ghana) and French (Niger, Mali).

- Strong time management skills
- Production experience and knowledge of metrics system
- Proven ability to lead a team in a commercial insect facility in a Production management role;
- Ability to motivate staff to meet and exceed expectations.
- Demonstrates a strategic approach and passion for sustainability in the insect farming sector. Successfully drives operational excellence via continuous improvement.
- Ability to articulate complicated topics to a varied variety of stakeholders.
- Capable of multitasking efficiently under pressure.
- Demonstrates teamwork by sharing knowledge and aiding others to attain common goals.
