Global Communities Calls For Job Applications

ROLE: VP, Strategic Communications

The VP of Strategic Communications will create and implement comprehensive communications and marketing strategies to advance our purpose, strengthen our brand and worldwide reach, communicate our priority strategies, programmatic results, and thought leadership, and engage our key stakeholders.

Global Communities’ VP of Strategic Communications will oversee market category leadership brand, external and internal reputation and commitment building. This position demands brand positioning, international development and humanitarian ecosystem knowledge, leadership, negotiation, and cultural adaptability.

Global Communities’ senior leaders and the VP of Strategic Communications will coordinate messaging and guarantee an integrated marketing and communications strategy that elevates the brand’s identity and thought leadership.

Responsibilities

Integrated Strategic Communications

The Vice President of Strategic Communications will ensure an integrated strategic communications approach to drive brand awareness, positioning, and messaging to support organizational objectives, as well as the development and execution of multi-platform creative marketing campaigns to reach target audiences with Global Communities’ messages, using data analytics to track progress and adjust strategies as needed. The Vice President of Strategic Communications will, for example:

  • Lead the development, continuing management, implementation, and evaluation of the organization’s overall brand strategy and content development in order to attract and link external and internal stakeholders to our vision, purpose, and values.
  • Evaluate brand visibility, efficacy, and coherence through regular contact with key audiences; identify difficulties; and devise methods to refresh, adjust, or rectify brand management and integrated communications strategies as appropriate.
  • Lead a collaborative process with technical leaders to develop focused marketing initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Global Programs leadership to ensure that overall brand and marketing strategies are aligned and support Global Communities’ fundraising and resource mobilization activities, as well as the 2030 Vision for Growth.
  • Oversee the functional operation of digital sites and the global development and effective dissemination of dynamic marketing materials and multi-platform multimedia content in support of Global Communities’ brand and strategic communication objectives.

Media Relations and Crisis Communications

  • Oversees the implementation of a media relations plan to promote Global Communities’ activities to specialized and mainstream media in support of the organization’s objectives.
  • Develop and oversee the implementation of initiatives to reduce the potential of unfavourable news and manage negative stories as they emerge, responding as needed.
  • Advise the Executive Leadership and Senior Management Team on media management.
  • Maintain and update Global Communities’ crisis communication policy as well as the corresponding crisis response resources.
  • Serve as Global Communities’ primary media representative and, in the event of a crisis, lead the public reaction alongside the Executive Team.

Public Engagement and Thought Leadership

  • Lead the creation of Global Communities’ public engagement strategy to support the organization’s brand and growth objectives.
  • In collaboration with other senior leaders, the VP Strategic Communications is responsible for identifying priority stakeholders and networks, as well as overseeing the development and implementation of effective relationship management, engagement, and development strategies with each to support organizational goals.
  • Lead outreach to Congressional staffers, committees, and members; think tanks; peer organizations; coordination forums; and advocacy groups as needed.
  • Oversee the organization’s involvement in memberships and public events, including the placement of Global Communities experts on panels and public forums, as well as efforts to collaborate with Global Programs leadership to highlight Global Communities’ work at public events, ensuring that public presentations and engagement are on-brand and advance organizational goals.

Executive and Internal Communication

  • Support Global Communities’ President and CEO with Executive Communications, including speeches, panel discussions, office visits, media interviews, and public appearances.
  • Then, Review and clarify talking points, background briefings, frequently asked questions, and other materials for Global Communities’ Executive Leadership and Senior Executive
  • Team to support internal and external communications and outreach, ensuring messaging is consistent with the organization’s identity, communications strategy, and policies.
  • Serve as the Executive Sponsor for the cross-departmental effort to redesign the global Intranet (SharePoint), which includes Information Technology and Global Programs Knowledge Management, by ensuring a strong, high-functioning internal digital platform and coordinating internal and external resources for design, development, and launch.
  • Oversee the creation and delivery of internal training and capacity-building programs to improve communication skills and ensure the consistent application of brand standards throughout the organization.

People and Budget Management

  • Lead and manage the communications team, ensuring that clear objectives and accountability are set and met.
  • Responsible for managing the organization’s communications budget and ensuring that resources are used effectively, strategically, and responsibly.
  • Lastly, Support organizational initiatives to adopt emerging technology and digital communication platforms, such as generative AI.

POSITION-SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

A minimum of 10% domestic and/or international travel, which may include high-risk destinations

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proven ability to lead, manage, and develop staff and projects under changing priorities and deadlines.
  • The capacity to properly express and effectively translate strategy into results.
  • Ability to manage and communicate effectively in writing and speech to a diverse variety of stakeholders, including the press, policymakers, corporations, technical specialists, donors, and the public.
  • Experience in artificial intelligence, emerging technology, and communication platforms.
  • A proven track record of developing and implementing strategic marketing plans for a variety of target audiences in order to reach and/or exceed organizational development and revenue goals.
  • Ability to manage tough situations diplomatically, sensitively, and tactfully.
  • Strong experience in international development, US foreign policy, or the global media landscape.
  • Fluent in both written and spoken English,
  • demonstrated exceptional editing and communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in a comparable discipline with 15 or 20 years of related job experience.
  • A master’s degree in a relevant subject and at least 13 years of experience are preferred.
  • A minimum of 13 years’ experience in communications, public relations, or a similar field is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of non-profit and international development experience is preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of supervision experience is preferred.
