Global Communities Job Advertisement

ROLE: Senior Specialist, Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH), Ghana Health Program

Overview:

Global Communities works at the intersection of humanitarian aid, sustainable development, and financial inclusion to save lives, make sure that everyone has a fair chance at a good life, and build strong futures.

We work with local leaders, governments, civil society, and the private sector in more than 35 countries to help communities take charge of their own development. Our goal is to create a more just, prosperous, and fair global community.

We work with government, non-government, private sector, and community stakeholders to promote transparency, encourage accountability, and give them access to the channels they need to make their voices heard, bring about change, and reach their full potential.

Global Communities is looking for a Senior Specialist, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH), for the upcoming USAID Ghana Health Program (GHP). This five-year program aims to speed up the reduction of preventable deaths and illnesses among mothers, babies, and young children in Ghana.

The Ghana Health Program builds on Ghana’s health and development progress so far to improve the delivery of integrated health services for vulnerable populations. Local institutions and health system actors will be able to do more, last longer, and be more resilient with the help of technical assistance and service delivery activities.

USAID thinks that the help from this program will make a big difference in Ghana’s progress toward the goals set out in its national strategies for preventing deaths of mothers, babies, and children, improving nutrition and fighting malaria and HIV. This includes putting more attention on primary care through the Ghana Health Service’s Community Health Planning and Services policy, the new Network of Practice approach, and the quick growth of basic emergency obstetric care and support services for mothers and babies.

Responsibilities

In close collaboration with the Chief of Party, the Senior Specialist, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (Sr. Specialist, MNCH) will be in charge of the overall strategic and technical vision for mother, newborn, and child health. Among the specific duties are the following:

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of integrated MNCH program strategies that follow the rules set by USAID and the Ministry of Health.
  • Provide mentoring and capacity building at the individual, organization, and program levels in MNCH.
  • Find and use the right facility- and community-based strategies to deal with barriers to access and gaps in service delivery.
  • Take part in regular, structured reviews of programs and data to help guide adaptive management.
  • Help and back up the technical managers of the program to make sure that all planned activities are carried out on time and with the highest quality.
  • Work with the program leadership team to come up with and implement a plan for knowledge management and shared learning. This plan should include setting research priorities for implementation.
  • Lead the development of the design and content of technical materials, briefs, papers, and other products for knowledge management and visibility.
