Crane Supervisor at Newmont Mining Corporation

Newmont is one of the biggest gold companies in the world. It was started in 1921 and has been on the stock market since 1925. The company is based in Denver, Colorado, and has about 24,000 workers and contractors. Most of them work at Newmont’s core operations in the U.S., Australia, Ghana, Peru, and Suriname.

This Role

To plan, oversee, and organize the safe and efficient operation of mobile cranes, rigging, and lifting activities into designated site positions.

In this role, you will:

Continuous Improvement

  • Measure the general performance of equipment and infrastructure and make a report on it.
  • Help make sure that processes and systems are always getting better by looking for chances.
  • Help with troubleshooting, finding the root causes of problems, and evaluating them to improve the availability and performance of the crane.
  • Review how well the team did at doing its work so that any problems can be found and fixed.

Planning a Crane

  • Watch over how cranes and other equipment are booked.
  • Plan, develop, and come up with ideas for important lift plans, as well as do other pre-lift risk assessments.
  • Then, Watch over how heavy mobile crane teams are put together.
  • Give the final sign-off for action on cranes that have been put together.
  • Also, Make budgets for cranes and keep track of prices.
  • Work with the Operations Supervisors to figure out the best way to finish jobs without slowing down production.

How to Apply

  • Manage and keep an eye on how the crane and ropes work.
  • Supervise and give specific technical advice and direction on the mine site for important lifts.
  • Watch over and help Crane Operators follow the policy for the daily pre-start check.
  • Watch over the Crane Operators as they check the tools once a month.
  • Make sure that the Crane Operators write up and file notes about inspections.
  • Watch over everything that has to do with cranes on the mine site.
  • Watch over the operation of the crane in the decant area. (tailings).
  • Watch over how the crane is used on the basement project.
  • Supervise mill liners moving during liner change out.
  • Crane Operators need to be trained and held responsible for operating and working in a safe way.
  • Act as a caretaker and keep track of all certification, repair, and inspection records for lifting tools and machinery.

Taking care of health and safety

  • Take personal responsibility for the health and safety of every worker who works for him or her or who is given to him or her.
  • Help with the day-to-day running of the business and make sure safe work practices are followed.
  • Make sure that all actions follow the law to the letter.
  • Protect important safety rules for cranes and pulling.
  • Hold safety meetings and checks on a regular basis.
  • Come to meetings and safety checks every month.

Maintenance and repairs are also part of the job.

  • Check on the state of the cranes and their scheduled maintenance.
  • Schedule crane call-outs on-site and organize repairs when they break down to cut down on downtime.
  • Make sure that all load tests that need to be done are done.
  • Make sure that all of the crane and rigging equipment is certified to meet the law’s minimum standards.
  • Make sure the cranes and other tools are in good shape and safe to use.
  • Check and take care of all high hoists on the job site.
  • In the over-crane logbook, write down any repair work that is done.
  • When moving from one place to another, crawler cranes need to be taken apart and put back together.

Supervision of staff

  • Talk to the repair Supervisors and explain what training the repair staff needs and wants.
  • Take part in the development of teaching methods and help people learn how to operate cranes.
  • Supervise and handle the work of contractors who help the Crane.
  • Supervise the assigned staff member(s) by putting tasks and duties in order of importance and assigning them.
    • checking and keeping an eye on the level of work.
    • offering training, mentoring, and coaching on the job.
    • doing the first part of a job review.
    • recommending more/relevant training courses and actions for growth.
    • putting people in trouble for bad behavior or acts (first level of disciplinary).
    • approving time off (first signature) and improving communication with staff through feedback, contact, meetings, and briefings on a daily basis.

Work Scheduling and Allocation

  • Create a daily work plan and give work to the Crane Operators to speed up work and get high-priority tasks done when necessary.
  • Set up short-term tasks that will keep the work going.
  • Exercise considerable judgment in setting job priorities.

Conditions of work

  • These are some of the physical requirements and aspects of the work setting that an employee must meet in order to do the most important parts of this job well.
  • Vision skills needed for the job include the ability to see up close, far away, in color, in the periphery, and to change focus.
  • Situation at work: There is a lot of noise out in the field where people work. Noise, fumes, sharp edges, dust, pinch points, shaking, and slippery surfaces are sometimes present.
  • When it comes to accident risks, incumbent is supposed to follow the Clear-20 Rule.
  • It is expected that the person in charge will be able to stay focused on projects at all times.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist

Formal Qualifications (including Professional Registrations):

  • Motor Vehicle Technician II (MVT II) or the similar.
  • Certification of Competency for Crane Operators.

Additional Knowledge:

  • Expertise in the basics of maintenance and business standards.
  • Knowledge of how to handle work at a high level.
  • Planning and organizing skills at a high level.
  • An equipment Operating License (E&F) is necessary.

Experience:

  • At least 6–8 years of experience running cranes in a process plant or in a large-scale multi-pit operation.
  • At least two to three years of work as a boss.

Technical Skills:

  • Communication and social skills are at a high level, both in writing and in person.
  • Strong skills in analyzing and fixing problems.
  • Strong skills with computers – MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Strong skills in keeping track of and managing information.
  • Strong planning, organizing, and sorting skills.
  • Strong abilities to coach and teach.
  • Strong skills as a leader.
  • Being able to calibrate a crane with a load cell to make sure it lifts correctly.
  • Being able to use a crawler crane to move heavy tools.
  • Ability to use Grove Crane GRT880, GRT165, and GMK5200. All and Rough Terrain Cranes, each in their own right.
  • The ability to use a high work platform (EWP)
  • Ability to drive a truck with a crane on it (HiaB Truck)
  • Able to pass all cranes’ part lines.
  • Being able to fix high cranes.
  • Ability to use an overhead hoist to move big machinery around the mill area (i.e. motors, pinions, gearboxes).
