Study In USA: Duke University Merit Scholarships 2024
Duke is offering merit scholarships to prospective first-year students. These scholarships cover the cost of tuition, room & board, and other necessary costs for four years of full-time undergraduate study. An additional application is not necessary for these scholarships.
Concerning Duke University
The United Methodist Church is connected to but does not have control over Durham, North Carolina’s private, coeducational university. A year after a regular educational program was started in a schoolhouse in Randolph County, west of Durham, in 1838, the Union Institute Society was founded to oversee and fund the institution.
Originally formed as an academy, the college changed its name to Trinity College in 1859, relocated to Durham in 1892, and reorganized as Normal College in 1851. In 1924, the college received a new charter and was renamed Duke University, thanks to a gift from tobacco tycoon James Buchanan Duke. Washington Duke, the father of the college’s founder, had convinced the board of trustees to relocate the institution to Durham and had provided funding for Trinity College. There are about 14,000 students enrolled overall.
Trinity College and Woman’s College, two distinct campuses maintained by Duke for undergraduate male and female students, were combined into Trinity College in 1972. In addition to Trinity (liberal arts), the university has graduate programs offering a range of master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as schools of engineering, law, business, divinity, medicine, nursing, public policy, and the environment. One of the most well-known facilities of its sort in the nation is the university’s medical center.
Why attend Duke University to study?
A First Year Intended To Assist Your Success
Our first-year programs were created to support you in succeeding at Duke from the very beginning because we recognize that going from high school to college is a significant shift. Along with living together on the East Campus, you will take writing and seminar courses with other first-year students to develop the critical thinking and communication skills you’ll need for the duration of your undergraduate degree. For first-year students exclusively, we also provide the Focus Program, which allows you to enroll in groups of thought-provoking classes on topics that cut across academic areas.
Liberal Arts Skills = Life Success
The benefit of a Duke liberal arts education is that it equips you with knowledge and ways of thinking that are useful for any line of work. We’ll impart the knowledge and abilities required to succeed in collaborative work, think critically and consider many viewpoints, write effectively, conduct accurate analysis, and foster independent and higher-order thinking. These kinds of experiences are portable.
Reasons to Be Flexible and Multidisciplinary
Students at Duke are imaginative, incredibly intelligent, and driven to change the world. We maximize this potential by providing an exceptionally flexible program. You may design the greatest learning environment for yourself at Duke. It’s simple to combine majors, minors, and certificates to help you create the life you want to live rather than just obtain credentials. We also value multidisciplinary approaches in all we do, including teaching and research.
Our Program II is specially made to cater to students whose transdisciplinary interests are difficult to satisfy with the offers that are currently available. Outstanding insight and discovery are frequently produced by this blending, bridging, and blurring of conventional academic boundaries.
The application procedure
Except for the Robertson Scholars Program, there isn’t a distinct application procedure for merit scholarships for incoming first-year students. The basis for determining your eligibility for merit scholarships is your Duke University application. This office will email you in early May to let you know if you have been chosen as a merit scholarship finalist. Scholarship selection committees will next interview the finalists, and merit scholarships will be given out by the middle of June at the latest.
Faculty and Academic Community Involvement
As members of an aspirational and supportive intellectual community, Merit Scholars both contribute to and gain from this environment. A respected Duke faculty member and campus leader who has decided to devote additional time to engaging with undergraduate merit scholars oversees each scholarship. Throughout the academic year, scholars will also take part in field trips sometimes, learn from guest speakers at events like the Faculty Flash Talks on Race and Society, and interact with faculty mentors through initiatives like Critical Conversations.
ENRICHMENT EXPERIENCES
Honor Throughout their time at Duke, scholars have access to a wide range of educational enrichment opportunities. Scholars can seek to utilize their enrichment money to pursue a range of experiential opportunities after completing their first year. Around the world, researchers work in labs and archives, intern in the public or private sector, perform volunteer work, and work on creative initiatives. Scholars showcase their projects in the OUSF poster session every year.
RESEARCH AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
Renowned academics give seminars and small classes in the classroom at Duke starting on the first day. Academics and faculty members can collaborate to address pressing issues at the forefront of public service and research. Through one-on-one encounters with Duke professors, visiting scholars, scholarship alumni, and other scholars, scholars can secure research positions as early as their first year, discover opportunities to receive professional mentoring, and get early exposure to elite faculty.
