Concerning Wingate University

Approximately 53% of qualified juniors study overseas through W’International, our popular affordable seminar that combines a semester-long course with a 10-day international trip.

Over fifty student organizations are officially registered, encompassing academic clubs, service organizations, honor societies, intramural sports, sororities, fraternities, and student government.

Of undergraduate students, almost 75% reside on campus.

Although Wingate University wasn’t even a college formed in 1896, it has since become one of North Carolina’s top universities. From first grade through high school, in Union County, North Carolina, and Chesterfield County, South Carolina, Baptist associations aimed to offer reading instruction.

There were not many public schools in the Carolina Piedmont at the time. The location was selected because of its proximity to the Seaboard Air Line Railway. Additionally, Meadow Branch Baptist Church was nearby.

Situated on ten acres with magnificent oak trees and a stream, the Wingate School was constructed. From this tranquil location, the school’s founders raised it.

Trustees named it Washington Manly Wingate in honor of the late Wake Forest University president.

  • Wingate’s initial leader was Marcus B. Dry.
  • Ms. Polly Crowder and Dry were the curriculum teachers.
  • The first year’s enrollment was 175 pupils.
  • Enrollment peaked at 292 in 1904.

Wingate began accepting boarding students, primarily upper-grade high school students, as additional public schools started to spring up in North Carolina. In the interim, Wingate:

  • Acquired additional land
  • Constructed lodging and educational facilities
  • Developed a solid reputation in academia
