Central Lakes College’s past
Central Lakes College, which has its roots in liberal arts and career education for Central Minnesota, combines the best aspects of Brainerd Community College and Brainerd Staples Technical Colleges.
On July 1, 1995, BCC and BSTC merged to form CLC. The colleges have a lengthy history together. With twelve students, Brainerd State Junior College, a community college, first opened its doors in 1938 on the third floor of Brainerd’s Washington High School. Two years later, the Class of 1940—a group of 19 graduating students—celebrated their receipt of college degrees.
The establishment of a junior college for the community was supported by the Brainerd School Board. Up until 1964, when the Minnesota State Junior College System of 10 mission-sharing institutions statewide was established, that board was still in charge of the college’s operations.
The college was still in operation on the third floor of Washington High School from 1938 to 1957. In 1957, the high school’s laboratory facilities were used on the first floor and basement of Lincoln Elementary School.
When it came to defining their respective areas of specialization, liberal arts, and career education parted ways in 1963. Brainerd Junior College and Brainerd Technical Institute (later renamed Brainerd Technical College) were now established.
The first structure constructed on the southwest Brainerd site (now known as CLC) was the state’s first junior college building.
Building projects were completed in 1969 (a gym), 1971 (art studios), 1974 (student center), 1989, and 1991 as a result of the 35-year enrollment increase. The institution was renamed Brainerd Community College (BCC) in 1973 and had grown to accommodate 1800 students by 1992.
Programs at Brainerd Technical Institute and Staples Technical Institute, located in the historic railroad town of Staples, were created to adapt to the shifting demands of business and industry.
