Job Title: Head of Partnerships, Africa

The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI) is a non-profit group that helps governments with strategy, policy, and implementation through its policy work and advisory practice. As the Institute grows, partnerships are a smart way to make a bigger difference on a larger scale by bringing in expertise, resources, and technologies that will speed up economic and social development and make changes that will last.

Job Introduction

The Head of Partnerships, Africa is a key part of TBI’s plan to reach its goals. The role will be in charge of building and running a portfolio of impactful, scalable partnerships in the Africa region. This will make TBI the “go-to” organization for progressive leaders and governments, for whom we deliver Policy, Strategy, and Delivery, with Tech as a horizontal.

The main goal of the portfolio will be to speed up our work in the region through The Tomorrow Partnership, which is a landmark partnership platform. Through The Tomorrow Partnership, we work with governments, experts, and innovators to make big changes by helping leaders, countries, and communities use the power of technology for good.

Help with moving will be given to the person who gets the job if they need it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working closely with the Director of Global Partnerships and reporting to the Africa Advisory structure, responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
  • Focusing on TBI’s Tomorrow Partnership platform, create an Africa-specific partnerships strategy for a dedicated portfolio of partnerships that meet TBI’s goals for the region and on a global scale.
  • Set and meet annual OKRs for African partnerships that are in line with and contribute to the Partnership and Initiative (PI) Team’s OKRs.
  • Lead key Africa accounts in terms of prospecting, soliciting, developing partnerships, and taking care of them.
  • Help and Advice Country Teams are in charge of scoping and matching offers from TBI’s Landmark partners with our client governments. They also work closely with the African Regional Tech Advisors (Global Client Solutions Team) to help deliver these landmark partnerships.
  • Serve as a link between the rest of the Strategy & Partners Division and TBI Africa Advisory. This includes S&P’s Business Development and Income, Global Innovation Unit, and Representative Offices.
  • Work closely with TBI teams and partners to solve problems with implementation and lead teams to solutions that will have a bigger impact, going to leadership when necessary.
  • Using TBI’s CRM and other tools, keep a clear and organized way to track partnership pipeline and engagement.
  • Pay close attention to what the portfolio can do for TBI and our participating partners as a platform.
  • Manage your portfolio’s key performance indicators and lead partner impact reporting for your portfolio.
  • Represent TBI at external events
  • Be a strong leader for the culture and values of TBI.
  • Important ties within the company: S&P department leaders and their teams; PI leadership and department; Regional Directors and Country Directors, Global Advisory; key country teams; Community Engagement Team; Global Client Solutions, especially the Regional Tech Advisors; Legal department.

Person Specification

  • This is a senior leadership position that calls for an outstanding candidate who wants to gain more experience in a growing portfolio:
  • A lot of experience leading partnerships and/or managing high-level relationships and working with contracts.
  • Bachelor’s or postgraduate degree or equivalent practical experience
  • Wide knowledge of the African tech ecosystem
  • Strategic thinker who can question the status quo and come up with plans for achieving difficult goals
  • The ability to work in a business environment that changes quickly and is growing
  • Proven ability to manage a large number of projects and initiatives, including delegating tasks and keeping track of how well they are done.
  • A history of making and keeping partnerships and alliances with many different kinds of organizations
  • A natural connector and organizer who can handle a large number of outside relationships while navigating a complex internal organization.
  • You will have a history of delivering operationally with a positive impact. You will be focused on impact.
  • Problem analysis and problem-solving skills have been shown at both the strategic and functional levels
  • Proven track record of coming up with creative and innovative ways to create new initiatives and systems that help reach set goals
  • With experience and a strong network of actors in at least one of TBI’s partnership portfolios’ most important areas: tech and digitization, life sciences and health innovation, the environment, and/or how well the government does its job
  • Excellent skills in writing and talking to people
  • A self-starter who has shown that they can do it on their own.
  • Willing to travel and eager to learn from team members around the world.
  • TBI’s work is important to them, and they agree with our mission and values.
  • French is nice to know, but not necessary.
