The University of Rochester extends a warm invitation to students from around the globe to apply for its scholarship program for the years 2024-2054. Applicants must apply for their preferred program of study from the university’s selection of over 250 courses.

About the University of Rochester

The University of Rochester is a renowned research institution situated in Rochester, New York. If you seek a versatile research university that offers robust opportunities in both the sciences and arts, the University of Rochester is a worthwhile option to investigate. An outstanding characteristic of the University is its open curriculum, which grants students full autonomy in selecting their courses.

Established in 1850 as a higher education institution focused on the humanities and sciences in Rochester, New York.  As it evolved into a contemporary research institution, it led the way in advancing the field of optics (partly due to the influence of Kodak, Bausch & Lomb, and Xerox in Rochester). It also introduced the biopsychosocial model for medical education and, more recently, created the Rochester curriculum, which grants undergraduate students an exceptional level of autonomy to explore their academic passions.

The future of higher education worldwide relies on the ongoing endeavors of research universities to attract renowned staff and gifted students. The University’s dedication to education and research, transcending disciplinary and national barriers, is exemplified in its mission: to acquire knowledge, uncover new findings, promote healing, foster creativity, and ultimately improve the world.

The University of Rochester houses the School of Arts and Sciences, the Hajim School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the esteemed Eastman School of Music, which is recognized as one of the leading music schools globally. The University of Rochester Medical Center is a prominent academic medical institution in the United States, renowned for its ability to secure over $291 million in federal research funding.

Rochester University Scholarship Classification

The University of Rochester provides scholarships that are awarded based on both academic achievement and financial need.

Comparison between merit and need

Similar to other higher education institutions, the University of Rochester offers two categories of financial aid for the 2024-2025 academic year: merit-based scholarships and need-based scholarships. Typically, a financial aid offer from the University comprises various forms of assistance.

Scholarships based on academic achievement:

  • Scholarships are provided by Arts, Sciences & Engineering.
  • These scholarships are automatically renewed and added to your financial aid package every year.

Financial assistance is provided to individuals depending on their demonstrated financial need.

  • Available in the form of grants, loans, work-study, and other financial assistance options.
  • Granted by the Financial Aid Office.
  • Requires annual reapplication due to potential changes in your family’s financial circumstances.

Additionally, you need to be aware of the following:

  • Each application undergoes a thorough evaluation, considering several aspects such as assets, family size, number of individuals in college, and family income.
  • We provide merit-based financial assistance without considering a family’s demonstrated financial need.
  • Similar to other private colleges, Rochester employs an Institutional Methodology (IM) to determine an expected family contribution (EFC). Consequently, the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) at Rochester will vary from what is offered by other sources, contingent upon the unique circumstances of each family.
  • Students who submit all application materials by the deadline and are accepted into the University will receive a financial assistance award letter soon after they are notified of their admission. Applicants who submit their application late may not receive their award notice until after the May 1 deposit deadline. Therefore, it is important to stay vigilant and maintain track of all deadlines.

Merit scholarships

  1. Merit scholarships, often known as merit-based aid, are financial awards given to students based on their academic achievements or other exceptional qualities.
  2. The University of Rochester grants merit-based scholarships to first-year and transfer students who exhibit exceptional academic performance and potential, irrespective of their financial situation.
  • Merit scholarships can range in value from $2,000 per year to covering the whole cost of tuition.
  • All undergraduate applicants who are accepted to the College are automatically considered for merit scholarships.
  • Merit scholarships are granted to students at the time of admission and are extended each year if they maintain satisfactory academic achievement and full-time enrollment.
  • Each student is eligible for only one scholarship.
