Requirements for the Gilman-McCain Scholarship:

To be eligible for a Gilman-McCain Scholarship, certain requirements must be met:

  • Must possess U.S. citizenship or nationality.
  • Enroll as a student at a reputable U.S. college or university, whether it be a two-year or four-year institution.
  • To qualify, one must be a dependent of a currently serving member of the United States military, which includes the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy, as well as their reserve and National Guard units. This also includes the Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps.
  • At the time of application, you must either be currently receiving federal financial help (Title IV) or have documentation confirming that you will receive it during your study abroad program.
  • Seeking admission to or having been admitted into a program for academic study or internship abroad. Before receiving the scholarship funds, it is necessary for you to provide evidence of acceptance.
  • You will be applying to a program in a nation that is classified as safe for travel by the U.S. Department of State, with a Travel Advisory Level of 1 or 2. It is important to note that even in a country considered safe, there may exist certain regions that have been issued warnings at Level 3 or 4.
  • Restricted places are off-limits for Gilman-McCain scholars. You are not eligible to take part in programs located in countries or regions that have “reconsider travel” (Level 3) or “do not travel” (Level 4) advice.
  • The U.S. Department of State has the authority to request that you modify your program to a different country or region if they deem it essential at any stage of the application, selection, or program itself. The acquisition of the scholarship is contingent upon the availability of sufficient financial resources and the security of the program’s location.
  • If deemed necessary by the U.S. embassy, the program may be temporarily halted during its occurrence.

There are two designated periods during which applications can be submitted.

  • Planning to go internationally from September 2024 to April 2025? The application deadline is August 1st, 2024. Please note that your adviser must confirm your application by August 8th.
  • Are you considering traveling internationally from December 2024 to October 2025? Applications will commence in mid-August 2024. The application date is October 10th, 2024. Your adviser must confirm before October 18th.
  • Significant! Deadlines are based on Pacific Time (PT); therefore, please make the necessary adjustments according to your time zone. You will be informed of the rewards in December 2024.
