The California Institute of Technology is currently accepting applications for its Scholarships for the 2024-2025 school year. California Institute of Technology, with its various specializations, tuition costs, and acceptance rates, is widely regarded as one of the top schools that cater to the financial needs and interests of students seeking admission to pursue their higher education degrees. It boasts an average acceptance rate of 65% and an average graduation rate of 61%.

The tuition for the 2019-2020 academic year amounted to $52,857, while the cost of room and board was $16,433. Approximately 70% of students at the California Institute of Technology are expected to get financial aid in order to fulfill their proven financial requirements.

1. Scholarships based on financial need.

  • Required Degree: Bachelor’s
  • Scholarship Amount: The scholarship covers the entire amount of financial need established by the applicant.

Caltech exclusively provides need-based scholarships, without offering merit-based scholarships to international undergraduate students. Consequently, the scholarship amounts are determined by evaluating the students’ verified financial requirements. Furthermore, it is calculated based on the university’s cost of attendance minus the student’s family contribution. Prospective students can submit their financial aid application to the institution to determine the amount of scholarship funds they will be awarded.

2. Research and Teaching Assistantships

  • Acceptable Degree: Master’s and PhD
  • Scholarship Value: Covers tuition, and student expenses, and provides a living stipend

Caltech offers scholarships in the form of assistantships. Graduate students have the opportunity to apply for research and teaching assistantships, however, they are not eligible to apply for a course in which they are already enrolled. As Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Research Assistants (RAs), they have a mandatory workload of 20 hours per week for 12 weeks. However, during the summer, they have the option to increase their workload to a maximum of 40 hours per week.

Teaching assistants allocate their time to responsibilities such as preparing for classes, grading papers, conducting exams, and providing guidance to students. To instruct classes, teaching assistants must possess a strong command of the English language. Conversely, research assistants (RAs) carry out research-related tasks and support faculty members in their research endeavors. Both Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Research Assistants (RAs) are required to complete training before commencing their work. These student work possibilities enable them to enhance their professional and academic growth as they progress toward becoming full-time teachers.

3. The J. Yang Scholarship/Fellowship is available.

  • Acceptable Degree: Master’s and PhD
  • Scholarship Value: Covers tuition, and student expenses, and provides a living stipend

The J. Yang Scholarship is annually offered to two Taiwanese graduate students at the California Institute of Technology. The H. Yang and Family Foundation offers a highly esteemed scholarship prize. Academics will be granted a stipend along with the remission of tuition and fees. Students from any academic division may apply, provided they match the scholarship’s standards. Furthermore, their evaluation will also take into account the number of academic units they are enrolled in per term or academic year.

Research advisors have the option to nominate their preferred students. Once chosen, students will no longer be eligible for the Ministry of Education’s Taiwan-Caltech Scholarship program.

Application deadline for financial aid/scholarship

The deadline to submit a financial assistance application or loan request is one day after the start of the registration period for the term that comes after your most recent term of enrollment within the year. The registration must be completed by May 26th.

4. The Taiwan-Caltech Scholarship/Fellowship

  • Accepted Degrees: Master’s and PhD
  • Scholarship Amount: The scholarship covers the cost of tuition and student fees, and also provides a living stipend.

The Taiwan-Caltech Scholarship is provided by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan specifically for graduate students at the university. The Caltech fellowship/scholarship program is designed to assist students in their academic pursuits. All graduate students from Taiwan, regardless of their program, are eligible to apply.

To be eligible, individuals must exhibit exceptional academic achievement and must submit their application by the specified time stated on the fellowship’s webpage. Once chosen, students will be ineligible to submit further applications for the J. Yang Scholarship program. They will be provided with a stipend and have their tuition and fees waived.
