Study In Scotland: British Council EARTH Scholarships 2025

The Scottish Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) and the British Council Scotland SGSAH EARTH Scholarships 2025 are collaborating on international research projects under the support of SGSAH and funding from the British Council.

The program emphasizes interdisciplinary links within STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), with a focus on environmental arts and humanities. Its objective is to highlight the contribution that the arts and cultural sector can make to solving the climate issue and to the development of creative, sustainable research methods.

Concerning the Scholarship program

Scotland’s British Council Programmatically focused on environmental arts and humanities and their interdisciplinary connections, SGSAH EARTH Scholarships 2025 is an initiative of the Scottish Graduate School of Arts and Humanities (SGSAH), funded by the British Council, to facilitate international research collaborations between PhD and Early Career Researchers, Scottish HEIs, academic mentors based in Scotland, and external organizations.

The program’s overarching goal is to advance the environmental humanities’ and arts and cultural sector’s role and interventions in addressing the climate emergency, as well as their potential for interdisciplinary research in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) contexts.

Through research opportunities and international mobility, this program will foster sustainable research and cultural exchanges both within and outside of the arts, humanities, and cultural sectors. These efforts will help develop and promote new methods to addressing the global challenge of climate change.

Funding

Seven to nine researchers are expected to be supported in total by the British Council Scotland funding, with additional cohort members coming from PhD researchers at SGSAH who are sponsored by the AHRC and SFC.

The program’s guiding principles complement SGSAH’s internationalization goals and initiatives, as well as the larger goals of the British Council’s premier Going Global Partnerships program. They also mesh well with SGSAH’s GREEN/GRADUATE Strategy and Operational Plan. The program will be organized around the Environmental Humanities and Creative Industries/Economies, two of SGSAH’s strategic topics and priority areas, with an emphasis on themes related to the climate emergency, the interventions made by the arts and cultural sector, and the aftermath of COP26, which was held in Glasgow in 2021. Building on the SFC Saltire Emerging Researcher program and SGSAH’s Global Connects programs, the program will strengthen partnerships between Scottish and foreign HEIs.
