  • The Core Curriculum (9-15 credits) is specifically designed to equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to form a strong foundation in the discipline, building upon their previous undergraduate studies.
  • The elective curriculum (9-15 credits) is intended to provide students with the opportunity to customize their educational experience in order to fulfill their own research and educational goals. Depending on the program and its objectives, this requirement can be fulfilled either through further coursework or through further research experience.
  • The Research/Capstone Experience, worth 12 credits, is a customizable component of the degree program that is selected by the student and their academic advisor. It encompasses a combination of research and other capstone activities that further develop the information acquired via coursework.
  • A minimum of 36 credits at the graduate level, including coursework and research projects, must be completed. The courses must have a level of 200 or higher and must be authorized by the academic advisor.

Requirements for the thesis

Students who choose to pursue the thesis option must submit their application no later than the eighth week of their second semester. Thesis students are required to engage in research and write their thesis during the summer and following fall semesters. A minimum of six credits of thesis research (297) is mandatory, however, it is anticipated that students will register for 12 credits of M.S. thesis work. Upon obtaining approval from the academic adviser, a student who enrolls in a mere 6 credits of thesis research has the option to choose one of the following alternatives in order to fulfill the remaining six credits required for their degree:

  • Internship: Summer internship focused on research (295). Students are limited to participating in only one internship.
  • Enrichment Courses: Courses that enhance a student’s M.S. experience by providing a wider range of knowledge and skills.
  • Doctoral courses: Courses with numbers 300 or higher.
  • Students may register for more than 12 credits of M.S. thesis research if it is necessary and with the approval of their academic advisor.
  • Organizational Framework and Dissertation Examination

A committee consisting of the academic advisor and two additional faculty members assesses the proper completion of M.S. thesis work. The chairperson of the committee must be a faculty member affiliated with the program. Only one external faculty member or one research scientist is permitted. The assessment of M.S. thesis credits is based on a pass or fail grade. The decision to hold a public seminar showcasing the student’s work is up to the academic advisor’s judgment.

The student is accountable for arranging the date of the thesis defense with their academic advisor and committee members. The student is required to provide a hard copy of the thesis to the members of the thesis committee no later than two weeks before the scheduled defense date.

Students are required to fulfill the remaining credits by choosing one or a combination of the options provided below:

  • Enrichment Courses: Courses designed to expand a student’s knowledge and skills in their M.S. program.
  • The outcome of the defense will be determined according to the committee’s recommendation. There are four potential outcomes:
  • Pass: The student completes the exam and the dissertation is approved without any changes.
  • Conditional pass: The student successfully passes the exam, but is informed of the necessary adjustments that need to be made to the dissertation.
  • In the event of a failed retake, it is typically required for the student to conduct more research in order to successfully finish the dissertation.

The student is required to review the dissertation and undergo another oral examination within six months following the initial defense. If the student fails the exam, the dissertation will not be accepted, the degree will not be granted, and the student will be expelled from the University.
