Universities New Zealand—Te Pōkai Tara serves as the representative body for all eight universities in New Zealand. We are a formally established organization. We have the legal authority to oversee scholarship administration as well as the caliber of academic programs provided by New Zealand universities under the Education and Training Act 2020.
The eight university vice chancellors convene formally six times every year. Professor Cheryl de la Rey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canterbury, is the current Chair for the 2023–24 term. The chair position undergoes a rotation every two years.
A small staff supporting Universities New Zealand is under the direction of Chris Whelan, the Chief Executive, who reports to the Chair and Vice-Chancellors. A group of Portfolio Managers lead work programs that prioritize significant industry challenges. The work program is guided by a network of specialized committees and advisory groups, with members from each university.

Universities New Zealand was founded by the Education Act 1961 as the New Zealand Vice-Chancellors’ Committee. Since 2010, our organization has functioned under the name Universities New Zealand.
Our Māori name, Te Pōkai Tara, symbolizes a group of Caspian Terns, which are the largest species of tern and are found around the coastlines of New Zealand, migrating together on an upward trip. It elicits a link with the origin of knowledge and conveys a feeling of the enlightenment that university education can offer.

Eligible Nationalities for the Dick and Mary Earle Scholarship:
This award is available to those who are either citizens of New Zealand or permanent residents who have been in New Zealand for a minimum of three years.
