Study In France: Merieux Foundation – IRD Joint PhD Scholarship 2024

The Merieux Foundation – IRD Joint PhD Scholarship 2024 is now accepting applications from international students. The fellowship provides funding for PhD programs in several fields offered by universities in France. The scholarship application must be submitted by April 30, 2024.

Educational Attainment:

The Merieux Foundation – IRD Joint PhD Scholarship 2024 is open to individuals who wish to pursue doctoral studies at universities in France.

Essential information you should be aware of

Regional higher education interactions and cooperation in East Africa began during the pre-independence era when Makerere University College was the sole higher education institution in the region. It catered to students from Kenya, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), Zanzibar, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and Nyasaland (now Malawi and Zambia) in central and southern Africa.

In 1963, university colleges were created in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam as constituent colleges of the University of East Africa, which was constituted during the period of independence of Uganda, Kenya, Zanzibar, and Tanganyika. Makerere institution served as the third constituent institution within the University of East Africa.

In 1970, the University of East Africa was disbanded, leading to the establishment of the University of Dar es Salaam, Makerere University, and the University of Nairobi as independent national universities for Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya respectively. In the same year, the Inter-University Committee (IUC) was founded under the auspices of the first EAC to ensure continued collaboration between these universities.

The primary function of the IUC was to facilitate communication and collaboration among the three universities, namely the University of Dar es Salaam, Makerere University, and the University of Nairobi. The International Union of Conservation (IUC) was held in Kampala, Uganda. In 1977, the erstwhile East African Community (EAC) disintegrated and the level of assistance that the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUC) was receiving from the Partner States decreased. Nevertheless, although facing resource constraints that significantly restricted its operations, IUC maintained its role in facilitating collaboration among the three universities.
